[0:00]Hello, my name is Joe and I'm a student at the University of Cambridge. I'm going to tell you a little bit about my experiences of studying Natural Sciences, which is what I study here at Cambridge. Hopefully this video will be useful for you if you're thinking about applying for Natural Sciences and you want to know a bit more about what the course is actually like. So Natural Sciences, if you're not aware, is kind of an umbrella course that covers all of the sciences. So you get to study a real range of different subjects in your first year. So for example, I studied three sciences and maths in my first year, so that was chemistry, biology of cells, and material science, and then maths. So it's a really good opportunity to try out some different subjects, especially if you're not sure what you want to specialize in later on. I think this is one of the main reasons that I chose Natural Sciences is because I was quite indecisive at school and I didn't want to narrow it down too early. And it was a really good way of keeping my options open and trying out some new things as well. For example, I'd never studied material science before university, and it's actually one of the subjects that I'm carrying on with now into my third year. So it was a really good opportunity to try something new, and it turned out that I really enjoyed it. One of the things that I was worried about when applying for Natural Sciences was that because it covers so many different subjects, I was worried that it wouldn't go into enough depth in each of the subjects. But actually, I found that that's really not the case. You go into a lot of depth in each of the subjects, and you cover so much content. So if you're someone who really enjoys learning and you just love knowing how everything works, then Natural Sciences is a really good course for you. The way that the teaching works at Cambridge is we have lectures, practicals, and then supervisions. So the lectures and practicals are run by the university, and you have these with all of the natural scientists across the university. So there's about 600 natural scientists in each year, so the lectures can be quite big, but they're not too big. And then we have practicals which are in labs and you do experiments and they're really fun and it's good to get hands on. And then we have supervisions, and these are run by the colleges. So your college will organize your supervisions for you. And these are one of the most unique things about Cambridge and one of the things that I really enjoy. So they're small group teaching, so you'll have between one and three other students with you, and then you'll have a supervisor who is an expert in the field. And it's an opportunity to really go through any of the content from your lectures or practicals and ask any questions and just consolidate your learning and go into more depth in certain topics. And these are really helpful, especially when it comes to exam time, because you get to really test your knowledge and see what you know and don't know. So it's a really good opportunity, and it's also just really nice to have that small group teaching and feel like you can ask any question without feeling silly. So I'd say that the supervisions are one of my favorite parts about studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge. I hope that this video was useful for you if you're thinking about applying for Natural Sciences, and good luck with your application.
