[0:00]Developing semantics in your preschooler. Once a child is able to develop semantic skills, he will be in a position to recognize and define words. He will also be able to predict the plot of a story, understand its characters and be able to talk about the story after reading it. Post this skill, a kid will also be able to understand the difference between similar sounding words like cup and mug, and also be able to substitute one for the other. We give you some ways to help your kid develop semantic skills. Read books to your kid that tell stories. Fairy tales are specially a great idea here. But don't just stick to reading. Talk about the book as you read it. Discuss it. Get your child involved. Ask your child to predict the end of the story. Don't slow down the momentum. Once your child starts reading aloud, don't stop him mid-sentence if he gets stuck on a word. Read out the word to him, explain its meaning and let the child continue reading. This will actually increase understanding for a child. It is even better to go back and revise the word another time.
