[0:01]Hello parents, this is Jessica Goyal, director, Crafting Lives. important topic par aaj main baat karna chah rahi hu. A toddler, whether he has a speech delay or whether he has autism. Now, in my experience also I have seen that parents normally are very confused between the two. And it is a very natural tendency to get confused because the red flags of both of them appear almost the same. So, ek baccha jisko hame lagta hai ki speech delay hi hai, ho sakta hai usse kuch thoda sa bigger cheez ho. So today, I am going to touch upon four basic pointers or four red flags that every parent should see, which differentiate the two. And obviously, as I keep telling in all of my videos, that we are not here to diagnose. The parents also can't diagnose, but at least they can see, at least they can feel that it is not just a speech delay, it is something bigger and they need some kind of an expert advice. So, first of all, and the most important of all is the ability of a child to point. Now, pointing has a very important social communication indicator attached to it. Jab hum point karte hain ya jab baccha point karta hai, that is for joint attention. Like baccha dur koi cheez padi hui hai, usko interest kar rahi hai, wo apni mummy ko dikha raha hai, he is pointing. Ya use ek wo restaurant mein gaya hai maybe and he wants ki usme se saari cheezo mein se use French fries chahiye and he points it. So he shows his needs by pointing. So, speech delay mein pointing dikhti hai. The child is not able to speak, but the child is able to point apne gestures se wo saari cheezein bata sakta hai. In autism, they might hold a hand like this and go and take you, but they will seldom point. So this is a very important red flag. Now, the second point is, that one should understand is that a child with speech delay will understand, will comprehend language. So agar use kahein hum kuch dur par glass rakha hai aur usse kahein glass le aao, he'll put he'll bring the glass. Ya phir hum chaar paanch cheezein rakh de uske saamne aur kahein hamein katori de do, spoon de do, toh wo kahin na kahin he is able to understand language. You will also ask parents understand ki use samajh aa raha hai, simple cheezein samajh aa rahi hai, bol nahi pa raha, but samajh sab kuch pa raha hai. Whereas in autism, you will not see whether the child is understanding things. You will always feel ki nahi kuch kuch like a child might be thirsty aur wo jayega glass le aayega. But that is not understanding. That is what he needed and need based wo jaakar apne apni cheez le aaya. But if you ask him out of like randomly if you ask him jao glass lekar aao, he will not be able to bring glass because he is not able to comprehend. So that is second important indicator or a red flag where a child with autism doesn't show that he understand language. Whereas a speech delayed child will show that yes, he is able to understand language based on his developmental age. Now, the third important thing that one every parent must look into is play behavior of the child. Kya wo dusron ke sath khelna chah raha hai? Kya wo toy ko toy ki tarah hi treat kar raha hai, like car ko wo ek se apne se dusre ke pass bhej raha hai ya ball ko kick kar raha hai, ball ko throw kar raha hai. Ya wo kisi stereotypic play mein involve ho raha hai, jaise car li use spin kar raha hai, ya uski wheels ko dekh raha hai, ya line mein laga raha hai cheezo ko. So, the element of play is very different from in a child with speech delay and in a child with autism. Jab speech delay agar ek bacche ko hai aur aur koi symptoms nahi hai, so the child will play normally like bad ball khelega. Car se khelega aur dusre logo ke sath khelna chahega, chahe baccho ke sath badon ke sath, but he will like to play. Whereas a child who is developing or who is showing some symptoms of autism, will seldom play with others. Aur zyada tar uske play mein stereotypic play hoga, ki wheels ko dekh raha hai, ya ek hi string ko aise aise kar raha hai, ya kuch aisa hai jo different hai. Jo normal play ki category mein hum log nahi dekh rahe hain. And now, the fourth important point that everyone should see when they feel ki ha ye speech delay hai ki autism hai, is the ability to imitate. Nakal utarna. Nakal utarna ek speech delayed bacche ke liye bahut natural cheez hai. Jaise kisi bhi bacche ke liye hota hai, chota sa baccha ek dedh saal ka, even usse kam bhi, they see you, they observe you and they try to imitate you. Toh aapne claping kari, bacche ne clapping kari, aapne aise kiya, if he is at that age, wo bhi rolly polly karega. So bahut sari cheezein hoti hain jo jaise aapne mandir mein ghanti bajai, bacche ne bhi ekdam se ghanti baja di. So nakal utarna is very important skill which is present in a speech delayed child. But nearly absent in a child with autism. So this is another red flag that you should see whenever you think ki acha bacche ko autism hai ya speech delay hai. So these are the four main pointers that I would I wanted to discuss today and again a word of caution that we can just identify red flags. But yes, chahe speech delay ho, chahe autism ho, the child needs intervention as soon as possible. So you should seek help, lekin ye aapki understanding ke liye zaruri hai ki aapke bacche ko speech delay progress kar raha hai ya kahin na kahin uska autism progress kar raha hai. Thanks a lot parents, hope that was helpful to you. Thank you.
