[0:00]Hi, and welcome, students. In this Microsoft Word 2016 tutorial, I'm going to be going over how to display formatting marks. Let's get started. So you'll see that on my blank document here, I currently do not have any formatting marks being shown. And formatting marks are great because they're a helpful way to view non-printing characters on your document. So basically, every time you press the enter button, spacebar, or even other things, uh, like putting in section and page breaks. It's going to show you that those things are there, but it won't actually print them out. Let me give you an example. First off, let's figure out how to turn them on. If I go to the home tab, the paragraph group, and I click this button right here. Formatting marks show/hide, it's going to show hidden formatting symbols. This is especially useful for advanced layout tasks. So if you're doing something like formatting a resume or doing some sort of APA or MLA format on your, uh, Word document. You're definitely going to want to have these on to make sure everything's aligned just perfectly. And so when I turn this on, you'll see this symbol will show up, which is a paragraph symbol. As I press the space bar here, you'll see all the spaces that appear. As I press enter, you'll see more paragraphs being made. I could also go up here to, uh, say the layout tab and put in a page break, and you'll see the page break is displayed right there. I could put in, um, you know, columns or things like that, you're going to see the column break is put in right there. I could also insert something like a table down here, and you'll see the formatting marks within the table. Now, keep in mind on something where you have a document that has a little bit more text on it, like this one. Formatting marks can really help tell you if you maybe put an extra space, uh, in a place where it shouldn't be. I'll turn on the markers here, and you can see how it looks when it actually has document, uh, text on it. And you can see in between every single word is a space as well as formatting marks for every paragraph. So this is really, uh, also helpful for putting images and objects exactly where you want them on the page. And so, um, the last thing that I'm going to go over here is how to turn off your formatting marks. All you need to do is go to the home tab, paragraph group, and click the show hide button, and that'll remove your formatting marks. I remove them when I want to look at a document before I print it out. And when I do that, I can see exactly how it'll look, and then I'm ready to print. So hopefully this video has explained a little bit more about what formatting marks are, what they do, and how and when to use them. If this video has been helpful for you, please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing to the channel. If you have any questions, please put it in the comment section below, and uh, thank you for watching. Have a great day.
