Okay, let's get straight into it. Okay. Question number one, tell me about yourself and why you would be a good fit for the nursing assistant role? Pretty much guaranteed to be the first question you will be asked during your nursing assistant interview. Here are two tips before I get it I give you the suggested answer. Now make sure in your response, you talk about the job description and how you have read it in detail to make sure your skills and qualities are a match for the role. Very important, not many candidates will do this. Make sure you also demonstrate your understanding that some elements of the job are going to be difficult, but that you are looking forward to the challenge of that. So let's take a look at my suggested answer for this first nursing assistant interview question, tell me about yourself and why you would be a good fit for the role. Here we go. "Having studied the job description in detail, I feel my strengths and experience are a perfect match for the role of a Nursing Assistant. For example, I am a caring person who gets great job satisfaction from meeting the needs of others. I am a strong communicator, highly-organized and can work well under pressure. I understand this job will be extremely challenging at times, but I actually prefer to work in a pressurized and changing environment where I have the ability to make a difference. Finally, I very much enjoy working as part of a wider team and collaborating with other people to meet the needs of the patient, whilst also working towards the organizational goals and delivering on the set values that all staff must abide by." So if you take notes, if you need to watch this response again, please do and take notes on it because I believe that is a strong in-depth response and it gets you up on the right foot that will give you the confidence to move forward for the rest of the interview. Okay, next question. Tell me what you know about the role of a nursing assistant. Okay, now a couple of tips. Make sure you read the job advert and the key elements of the nursing assistant role. Which will form part of the job description. So if you can recite the key areas of the job description and explain how they are a good fit for your skills and expertise, all the more better. So here's my sample response for you. Tell me what you know about the role of a nursing assistant. The role of a Nursing Assistant is extremely diverse and varied and requires an ability to follow procedures, safety guidelines and strict protocol. As a Nursing Assistant, I would need to follow instruction and training provided by the Practice Nurse and General Practitioners, conduct testing and recording of the results of clinical specimens and also provide assistance in minor operations to ensure thorough and appropriate patient care. I would also need to assist with patient health checks, conduct routine patient dressings in accordance with my training and guidelines, ensure adequate clinical stock levels and medical stationery are maintained for effective functioning of the department, and also input the necessary information onto the Practice clinical system. Now whilst these are just a few aspects of the role, I understand the position is extremely challenging and will require professionalism, an ability to conduct myself competently and operate under strict guidelines and procedures at all time.

[4:15]So that's another really, really strong response to that question. Let's move on to the next one for your nursing assistant interview. What is your understanding of 'confidentiality' in the workplace? Now you and I know that confidentiality is absolutely vital in these kind of healthcare roles and in particular the nursing assistant role. So two tips, make sure you know what confidentiality is within the role that you are being interviewed for and also there is a code of practice generally, which all staff must follow and adhere to. Now whilst it will be covered during your training, make sure you are aware of its existence. So when you're responding to this question, what is your understanding of confidentiality in the workplace as a nursing assistant, if you talk about the code of practice providing you know about it of course, then that is an extremely positive thing.

[5:03]So here's my sample response to this interview question. I understand there is a strict Code of Practice that all staff within the organization must follow and adhere to. The Code of Practice determines what health and care organizations must do in order to meet their responsibilities based on confidentiality and, in particular, a patients' consent to how their health records are utilized and shared amongst staff and external stakeholders. Now the Code of Practice is a legal requirement and it is also based on organizational best practice. So that shows that you are aware of the code of practice and how it impacts on your role and your responsibilities, great response. Let's move on to the next question of your nursing assistant interview. Now you are trying to help a patient who is upset and confused. They refuse help. What would you do? Couple of tips here. Now read and understand the organization's guidelines which are based on capacity and what I mean by that is a capacity to make a decision. Now in most cases, a patient has the right to refuse treatment. Now as I say, you need to check this with the organization that you're applying for or whether it's the NHS, but make sure you check it. However, there are exceptions when a patient does not have the capacity to make the right decision and therefore the healthcare professional professionals will conduct an assessment and decide whether treatment and care should go ahead. Okay, here's my sample response to the nursing assistant interview question. You're trying to help a patient who is upset and confused, they refuse help. What would you do? Here we go. As I understand, all adults are presumed to have the capacity to decide on their own medical treatment, so they can refuse treatment or care. However, if there is evidence to suggest that they do not have the capacity to decide, a competent and suitable healthcare professional will conduct an assessment in order to make a decision. In this situation, it may be the patient is suffering from dementia or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, in which case I would seek guidance from a senior member of the nursing staff team to assist in the decision-making process. At all times I would follow Standard Operating Procedures and my training, and would never put a patient at risk or in danger. So that's a solid response to that question and shows that you are aware of the code of practice, very important. Okay, next question. How would you deal with a difficult or aggressive patient? Okay, probably, pretty much guaranteed that you will get asked this kind of question during your nursing assistant interview. Two important tips before we move on to the answer. Now the main thing to say here is that you will follow your training at all times. I also recommend you mention risk assessment in your answer and that you would use firm but non-confrontational communication skills to diffuse the situation, if it was safe to do so. So here's my suggested answer to that question. Now first and foremost, I would follow my training and operational procedures at all times. I would conduct an initial risk assessment, as the safety of myself, other staff, the patient and other patients would be paramount. If I believed that, following the risk assessment, the risk of danger was low, I would utilize effective open communication techniques to resolve the situation. I would remain calm, listen to what they were saying and ask them open-ended questions. I would reassure them and acknowledge their grievance, if they had one. I would then ask them to explain what has angered them, whilst maintaining soft eye contact. Now if at any time I felt there was a danger, I would call for assistance and would never put myself or anyone else in danger. So the important thing is that you follow training and procedures and that standard operational procedures for the organization you're being interviewed for, but that is my suggested answer. Now I'm going to give you a number of other nursing assistant interview questions to prepare for, but quickly before I do that, um there is a link below the video and it goes through to my website called passmyinterview.com.
