[0:01]Today the whole day I'm going to try and eat healthy outside under rupees 300. You had borrowed Rs 100 from me. Hey listen! How will I complete the challenge in Rs 200? Now that I'm left with 200 rupees only, it's quite a challenge. Well accepted. So without any further delay, let's get started.
[0:24]It's 10 in the morning and I'm feeling super hungry. So let's find out what healthy we can get in breakfast.
[0:36]So I have decided to eat what most of North India loves eating in breakfast, Aloo ke parathe. You might be wondering, parathe and healthy? Well there is a trick I will share. Hey, plate a potato paratha.
[0:57]So these are two Aloo Parathas, on top of it is little butter. The catch is that I requested the bhaiya to make parathas without the refined oil, ghee or butter. It's more like Aloo ki Roti. Alongside is Chhole curry, which not only adds the much needed protein but also makes the meal more tasty and filling. Then there is little bit of green chutney and pickle as well. This breakfast costed me rupees 50, that means I still have 150 rupees for the remaining day. But right now, let me jump in.
[1:32]I must say that the trick worked. I am feeling full but not heavy. This can be done with dosa as well. You can request the vendor and they will readily serve you an oil less dosa which you can have with chutney and sambhar. Then of course, idli is a great option too. See if you can get Poha nearby. Another easily available and healthy option can be fruits. You can get your hands on four to five ripe bananas. And if the vendor is flexible enough, he can even make a chaat out of it. Tea stalls are everywhere in India, request the vendor and he might oblige you with boiled milk. You can mix it with a packet of oats or muesli. Two to three glasses of fresh sugarcane juice is another tasty, filling and sweet start to the day. Then there are some options that you should try to avoid. Chhole Bhature and Poori Bhaaji. Not only because they are made out of 100% but also because they are deep-fried in reused refined oils. See, if you can get roti with the chhole, Kulche Chholle although a non-fried option but is best avoided. So basically, eating is a necessity but eating healthy is an art. So let's go to the next meal of the day which is lunch. It's lunch time and I have 150 rupees with me. Let's see what we can get here.
[2:47]Well, I have found a fresh looking thali. So let's have it.
[2:57]So the thali is here, it has three chapatis, a little bit of boiled rice, and then it has two curries, one is Rajma, the other is mixed vegetable curry. Then it also has some salad, along with it is a raita, which will not only amp up the flavor of the whole meal but will also help me digest it. Of course it is not made out of A2 milk but eating outside you can't be so choosy. Overall the meal has been made fresh, looks pretty homely and costed me rupees 60. So I am feeling very hungry, so let me begin.
[3:33]So I've had my lunch and it was really tasty and filling. Thalis are easily available roadside but again the trick is to customize it. For example, there was an option of taking butter naan, but I chose roti instead. One of the three curries was looking very oily, I skipped that too. You can significantly increase the protein content by buying paneer from a nearby shop and adding a few pieces to the curry. These little things make a huge difference. Other lunch options could be Rajma rice or Chholle rice. You can buy a packet of curd worth rupees 10 and take its taste to the next level. If you can find vegetable biryani nearby that too is a budget friendly, filling option. Then naans, Amritsari Kulche, Chhole Bhature and the like should be avoided for they are made out of 100% Maida. They won't fill your tummy for long but rather can disturb your digestion. So that's all I could find for lunch here. I have exhausted 110 rupees in two meals. I still have 90 rupees left. Fingers crossed. Let's meet for the next meal of the day, which is an evening snack. It's 4:30 p.m. and I am feeling hungry. But what do I eat? Anywhere I see things aren't so healthy. From Chowmein which is 100% maida, made in refined oil and some other well known unhealthy ingredients. The different types of rolls are no better. Honey chilli potatoes being deep fried in spoiled oils, that's not something I would like to subject my body to. Burgers aren't good as well due to the deep fried tikki inside. Similarly, Samosa, bread pakoda, and Kachori etc. are better avoided. Pav Bhaji and vegetable sandwiches are not good either. Momos, although steamed but are far from ideal. With such tempting options, it gets really hard to eat healthy at this time. But we are going to find out something.
[5:20]What are the stuffing? This is Aloo chana chaat. Actually I requested the Kulche Chhole wale bhaiya to just give me the filling of the kulche and he readily agreed. This is pure Jugaad eating, you see. And do you know what's the best part? It costed me rupees 20 only. So that means I still have 70 rupees to spend for dinner and dessert.
[5:47]Wow, it was so delicious. Better than the most dishes out there. But then it will be unfair not to share with you more healthy options for evening. One option could be roasted or steamed corn, often available. It's tasty and a satiating snack. Paneer Tikka, if it falls in your budget, can be consumed at this time. If you can find a Bhelpuri nearby, request the bhaiya to make it using puffed rice, bhuna chana, peanuts, onions, and tomatoes only. At a chaat bhandar, Dahi Bhalla is a fairly good evening snack. If you can find Litti Chokha near you, go ahead. Whole wheat roasted balls dipped in ghee is filled with protein rich sattu along with potato curry. It's not just super filling and healthy but mouth watering as well. Sugarcane juice can be another sweet, guilt free evening snack. Then fruits, fruit juices and shakes without ice cream are another good to go evening snacks. Tender coconut malai along with its water can be another option. On the go you can even buy roasted mungfali. So yes, it's not that hard to eat a healthy snack in the evening. Now let's meet for the next meal of the day which is dinner. It's 6:30 p.m. and with rupees 70 in my hand I'm here to have my dinner. So let's see what healthy we can get.
[7:05]Dinner should be consumed well before your sleep timings and it's best if kept light. So I'm going to have the humble dal chawal. Hey, plate a plate of dal chawal.
[7:19]Dal chawal is a light, well balanced and a satisfying meal, almost ideal for dinner. It also has some onions and chutney, which costed me rupees 40. I had the option of dal roti as well but since I had eaten wheat for the first two meals, I thought why not have rice to give a variety of nutrition. I am feeling already tempted, so let's have it.
[7:44]As far as other options are concerned, I could see that almost all the choices in lunch are present in dinner as well. So one can choose to have biryani, chhole rice or even thali as well. At this time you should definitely avoid things made out of refined grains and all that fried stuff. Okay, so I have completed my dinner but I still have 30 rupees with me. Sure I can have a dessert but frankly, I am feeling well stuffed. If you want to have a dessert outside, one option can simply be to consume a Meetha Paan. Paan is not only delicious but the betel leaves are known to activate the digestive enzymes and freshen up breath. Another option could be to visit a sweet shop and see if you can find something which is made out of jaggery. Chances are that you will find something. Third could be the traditional Khoya Kulfi. It is way better than those artificially flavored ice creams. Then pastries, brownies and other such stuff are best avoided if you are hunting for healthy dessert options outside. But I am not feeling hungry, what to do? Wait, I have an idea.
[8:47]What would you like to have? Sweet or Kulfi? Ice Cream. Ice cream? Should I bring khoya kulfi? Wait here for 2 minutes. I will get it for you. Now that was money well spent, isn't it? Then there are some. Punjab bullet, bullet, bullet everywhere. Two to three glasses of fresh soup. So friends, I hope eating healthy food outside won't be such a nightmare anymore. Of course when you are outside you can't expect food to be ideal in terms of health, but then you can smartly choose the best among the options available. As you saw, it's all about the little tweaks here and there. Sure some meal options might not be available in your area but with this approach you can amp up the health quotient of any meal and stay strong on your fitness goals. I must tell you that while spending time talking to most street vendors, I found that they are very understanding. Sometimes they would even go out of the way to help you eat healthy.
