So you actually can't follow the golden rule and what Jesus says is the sum of all the law and the prophets without empathy, but let's first define what empathy is. Empathy is the ability to intellectually and emotionally understand, share, resonate in the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of another person. You can think of it as putting yourself in someone else's shoes. It's different from sympathy because sympathy says, oh, I'm sorry you're hungry. Empathy says I'm not going to let you be hungry. Let me buy you lunch. pivotal if you want to follow what Matthew 7 verse 12 says in the sermon on the Mount when it says so in everything do unto others as you would have them do to you, for this sums up the law and the prophets. He says the same thing in Luke 6 verse 31 when he says give to everyone who asks of you and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. The only way that you can do that is if you are treating someone some way or they are experiencing something and you say, hm, would I want that to be happening to me? Would I want to be treated that, would that hurt my feelings? Yeah, that would hurt my feelings or that would harm me. So yeah, I'm not going to treat them that way. It is impossible to follow the golden rule without the concept and the practice of empathy. The active practice of putting yourself in the shoes of another person into their experiences and saying, you know what? I wouldn't want that done to me and I'm not going to treat someone how I wouldn't want to be treated. And I'm not the only one that believes this. Early Christians did as well. In James 2 verse 14, he said, what good is it my brothers if a man claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such a faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes or daily food. If one of you says to him, go, I wish you well, keep warm and well fed, sympathy, but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself is if it is not accompanied by action is You actually cannot follow Jesus and his teaching, what he said was the law and the prophets. What he said was the core of his teaching without the practice of empathy, putting yourself in someone else's shoes, because when you put yourself in someone else's shoes, it motivates you to act. And if you say you feel sorry for someone, but you are not motivated to act, you are practicing sympathy and not empathy. And therefore you are out of alignment with the golden rule that Jesus said was the core of his teaching.
