[0:02]I know what you're thinking. Tall, relatively athletic looking guy. He looks in the zone. Focused. I bet he's good at basketball. I bet he's going to knock down this shot like swish it like no rim all net buckets.
[0:20]Well, you'd be wrong. And that's why I'm playing basketball every single day to change that. In this challenge I'm going from pretty much having never picked up a basketball before, and training with no days off to try and make 10 threes in a row and be like my goat, Steph Curry. But the craziest thing about this is that what happens at the end was never part of the plan.
[0:51]I'm British, so I grew up with this ball and this one, not this one. But I love basketball, it's just whenever I've tried to play, I look like this.
[1:06]I've never been coached, never played in a real game, and never understood how this is possible.
[1:23]If he can shoot literally hundreds of threes in practice. How hard could it be for me to shoot just 10? Okay, it is day one. Um, this is obviously the attire we're going for. With the goal to shoot 10 threes in a row, I had to keep myself accountable. So I committed to making a video every single day, documenting my progress. Okay, so I literally just made a brand new Instagram account. It's called uh bench to baller. Uh obviously the other names that I would have gone for like Steph Curry's best friend were taken. I think this is just a bit of accountability to make sure I do it every single day. Um I'm kind of nervous about the amount of time it's going to take like editing a video, but there it is. Zero followers. It's the start. Day one. It's literally a five minute walk from my house to the nearest court here in London. So that's what made me feel like this challenge was even possible. All right, we're entering the gauntlet. Walking in, I was remembering this quote I heard to start before you're ready. And hopefully this is as bad as I'll ever be and the motivation to get better will keep me going. Right.
[2:32]Ah, flip. Yeah. Can't get worse.
[2:41]Oh my gosh. Yeah, imagine, imagine if I'm doing it when I'm 50 and I've got I walk my daughter down the aisle and then be like, no sorry, I got to nip off and get 10 threes in. Oh my gosh. The premise of the challenge is pretty simple. I have to try and make 10 threes in a row, but if I miss, then I have to go home and come back the next day. This is day one, uh, the plane's going. This is day one of playing basketball every single day until I make 10 threes in a row. I've never played a competitive basketball game, uh, this this could take years.
[3:22]That was an airball. That was pretty bad.
[3:29]See you tomorrow. That was so bad. What am I doing? Maybe not, maybe not enough legs. At least I hit the rim, flipping it. All right, now every day I got to edit a video.
[3:51]Who airballs the first day? The first one is done. It's quite funny. I just it's quite embarrassing I think, but uh yeah, start somewhere. Posting that first one felt like the start of something significant. Now just to get better at basketball. If people watched or if they didn't, I was going to make a video every single day. But what they didn't know was that there was something much more special behind all of this.
[4:16]Despite getting slightly closer, unfortunately, days two and three did not go much better. But I was totally surprised at the fact that people had watched the first few videos and were already giving me tips. And then it was day four. I'm ready, I'm feeling ready, I'm going to make my first bucket today. The amount of comments and advice you guys are giving me is insane. How can I not make one now? Okay.
[4:44]Give it. Oh, one, yes. Run, come on. Give it. Ah. Oh, one. Hey, it's going to happen. It's going to happen. I know that was, may have been a bit of an overreaction, but it's going to happen. Oh my God, give it.
[5:06]With a sudden burst of motivation, I wanted to properly learn the technique. So I watched the first few episodes of Steph's master class to get the basics down.
[5:17]See, now I know what people in the comments were talking about when they were talking about form shooting. I had no idea what that meant. I mean, I think I was doing it already like just short shots to the basket, but now I feel like I've been given a bit of a framework to go and do it. But quite quickly I was reminded about how hard this challenge would be. Life doesn't just stop for me to make 10 threes. And so over the next few days, I had to find time for it wherever I could. Kobe would get up at what 4:00 a.m. to train. It's 6:30. Ah, that's nothing, mate. That's nothing. And when traveling, being faced with the reality that finding a hoop in the middle of nowhere England is not always easy. I need to go and shoot. I can't fall my trousers, so I got to wear my own room. The wedding the night before. Where are we going?
[6:13]It definitely doesn't look like a proper court, but we're going to have to do something. We've got we've got a call. Got no net, but and no three-point line, but it's it's a rim.
[6:31]When I was home, I enjoyed the routine of going to the court and practicing and filming the workouts. I was still humbled by how bad I was, but it kind of felt like I was making progress. And it started showing.
[6:46]Two, two, yes. Come on. Two baby, two. Yeah. Let's just say I get quite excited every time I get a new record. I don't believe it in the win, in the win.
[7:05]Regardless of what happened the day before, every new attempt was a chance at a new record. Which is why it sucked when I kept missing, especially as the weather was only getting colder.
[7:20]All the practice, all the form shots, that high I felt when getting two for the first time, was met with real disappointment. And not knowing what to do when I got zero three days in a row. I had to confront the truth that it might not be as simple as I thought it would be. And then the next day was the first time I found other people already at the call. 10 threes in a row. Yeah, doing that basically 10 times. Do you want to do King of the Court?
[7:53]So uh, we are playing ones, King of the Court. Uh, I have not even had time to warm up, but this is a trial by fire. Jeez, man. And these guys were legit. Really legit. I'm competitive. I always love a game. I'm not going to say no. It's just this time, I guess, yeah, I wasn't quite prepared.
[8:27]I've never felt so violated on a sports pitch in my life. I I couldn't do anything, offense or defense.
[8:41]That was blocked. Making 10 threes is one thing, but being able to deal with that.
[8:51]Oh, tough, tough. I was so badly beaten there. Imagine imagine how good NBA players are. He dunked on my head and the ball fell and hit me in the head. It felt like my entire understanding about basketball had been rewritten before my very eyes. And honestly, in that moment it all felt pretty hopeless. I considered ending the challenge right there and then. I woke up in the middle of the night and did the one thing that I knew could turn it around.
[9:25]I booked a last-minute plane ticket to the place that first inspired me to pick up a basketball. Where I watched my first game and where I hoped would reignite the passion to continue with the challenge. New York City.
[9:41]It's not a great weather, but the first basketball hoops that I've seen.
[9:52]At least I bought an outdoor ball.
[9:56]It's cold out there.
[10:01]Yes, yes. Oh my gosh. I mean, I'm laughing. It was hilarious that brother, trying to find the nearest park, knee, clothes, camera kit. Nothing was dry. I'm there was no way I was going to make one, but I had a great time. Oh my gosh, if I get one today, it'll be a miracle.
[10:23]Still get my phone practice in.
[10:32]See, this is what jet lag is good for, because I'm wide awake. It's before 6:00 a.m. I know exactly where I'm going.
[10:49]I plan the trip to be a week long, which gave me enough time to go to some spots that I'd always wanted to play basketball at.
[11:02]No danger. I think it's just uh occupancy of one right now. This is sick. Of course, this is a little bit windy, but oh my gosh, this is sick. Brooklyn Bridge Park, maybe my favorite view of all time looking across the water at the Manhattan skyline. And there I was, as the sun was coming up, hooping in front of it. I tried not to worry about the outcome, but trust that the work I was putting in would eventually pay off and I'd get a new record.
[11:34]And I think it taught me to enjoy the process. The fact that I got to play and do attempts at these incredible locations that I'm usually looking at through a screen. You know, that's what it's about. Didn't matter if I got one or none today. To be in this place, watching the sunrise coming up, getting 1% better by doing the a long workout.
[11:56]Yeah, I'm glad I did this challenge. But then the real reason I came to New York.
[12:04]I wanted to watch a game, but I got there super early, like hours early to catch the pre-game warm-ups. And maybe, maybe speak to a player. I would I would love a shooting tip or two.
[12:21]Whoever gives me a good tip first, I'm going to buy their jersey. I thought there might be a chance going into it, but quickly realized that wasn't going to happen. The tunnels were rammed full of people trying to get autographs and what player is going to choose a 25-year-old guy to speak to over a kid. I managed to like move and lean over the side so I got a pretty good view looking down at the tunnel. And just at that moment, six's rookie VJ Edgecom was walking down. VJ, I'm playing basketball every single day trying to make 10 threes in a row. One shooting tip. I need one shooting tip. Hold your follow through. Follow through, there we go. We got it, boy. That was such a cool moment. VJ loves Jesus, is taking the league by storm in his first year and crucially, gave me some simple advice. And then something else happened that I wasn't expecting. I saw a couple guys signing autographs down below, but they weren't players. I took a closer look and who do I see? It's my buddy, Sean does magic with basketball YouTuber Jessa, who's also a really good player. I was super grateful to have a few mutual friends and me and Sean had a really nice chat. And then he said this. I'm asking the players for some shooting tips when they come through. Oh, you should ask Jesse. I basically started this challenge where I'm shooting 10 threes every day. We're 25 days in now, and my best is two in a row. What is your one shooting tip? I would say, start close to the rim, maybe make 10 layups in a row, then 10 free throws, work your way to the three. Great atmosphere. We managed to talk to some boys, get some advice. Obviously loads to work on, but it's nice to have some simple tips. I really enjoyed watching the game. It's always cool to see something in person and you get the atmosphere and it just hyped me up. But most of all, that I got advice from two people who I really respect. That was awesome. Oh, he held it and it's in.
[14:21]Nice guy, nice guy. And the next morning, I was back at it.
[14:36]I kept my word and got the VJ jersey specially made at the NBA store. It felt like the first physical representation of the challenge and how far we'd come. But also a commitment to never give up on the goal, no matter how hard it got. My last couple of days in New York, I did specific workouts based on each of the pieces of advice that the guys had given me. For Jesse, it was starting close to the basket and working back, and for VJ, it was holding that follow through.
[15:06]I pushed myself pretty hard in both and it was uncomfortable. Guys, no hate. No one never told me how to do a layup.
[15:15]I wasn't to concentrate. But everything good is on the other side of difficult thing. You you know that quite, that quite.
[15:24]I've been out here for almost three hours. Um, but then as if by magic. We, we, we, oh, oh, oh.
[15:39]Jesse, you legend. I returned home triumphant, feeling inspired and leaving New York with a dream.
[16:42]A young guy training towards his goals. The future's bright, possibilities are endless. But that's not this story. And something happened soon after that would change the trajectory of this whole challenge. Okay, this is crazy. I mean, I literally just received a message from someone I don't even know, who he's he's inviting me to play in a game, like to to be part of a team, not just one game. Oh my God, what? See, the thing is, I haven't told the whole truth. I had actually tried this challenge once before. Kind of. I was living in Spain, which is a big basketball country, and I'd fallen in love with the NBA. I'd even started my own podcast about it, but most of all, I loved Steph Curry. He was the same height as me. He was the underdog, and I wanted to be just like him. So one day, I borrowed an old ball from a friend and went to find a court. This was in 2022, almost four years ago.
[17:52]You're watching some of my first shots ever.
[17:58]Then a guy and his trainer pull up and I asked to play with him just to see how I would do. We've got Carlos here, and this is day one, the start of my basketball journey really. So we're going to have a one V one game. Yeah, one V one game. Only references I had were watching the NBA on TV and playing 2K.
[18:23]In my life I've never felt as out of place as I did on that court.
[18:31]I didn't even get close to scoring a basketball.
[18:44]Right there and then I vowed that I would get better at basketball and make a three in a real game just like Steph. An underdog counted out less talent, but I was going to do it. I started off doing little bits of training, but time passed and I had to return to the UK. The dream never faded away, but life got in the way and I was destined to never complete my goal. The same guy from years earlier sat in that chair, an opportunity staring him in the face.
[19:19]Knowing that I was an underdog, that I wasn't ready, but that I had to prove myself right. When would I ever be ready? All right, let's do it. Why not? I literally was thinking for five minutes straight about all the reasons why I shouldn't do it and, it doesn't matter. Let's do it. Let's be part of a team. I know I'm going to be bad, so I got to train to be a good teammate and try and, hey, this is part of the journey. I was I was not expecting it, but wow. The 10 threes is a big milestone. But I made the social media as accountability for a goal I'd set myself, years earlier.
[20:06]Although I was still doing the challenge every day, I had to change my focus. No one knew what I was really training for apart from Joel, the guy who messaged me.
[20:17]So I tried incorporating other things into my training, some dribbling, finishing, but it was pretty clear I was worse at those things than I was shooting. And I wasn't even good at that. And as winter was closing in, I needed help. One thing I wasn't expecting when starting the challenge was loads of coaches reaching out and, you know, I wanted to be fair and kind of give everyone a shot. And then I saw this lady Brianna, who runs her videos absolutely cooked some like good hoopers in a game, and I was like, this person needs to give me advice. I worked on a list of questions and sent over videos of my shot. There wasn't a lot of time before this game, and I needed the knowledge in my brain ASAP. I'm quite nervous.
[21:04]Hey. Yes, first game is coming up, a little bit nervous. I wasn't prepared for this so early on in the in the challenge. I thought it would take a lot longer, but there's a big goal of the the 10 threes in a row, sure whatever, but I I'd love to make a three in a game. First ever five on five game. Yeah. Like biggest thing for you, try really hard on defense.
[22:03]Oh bro, defense is just effort. Um like you just got to try. She just reminded me that it's okay to fail. And right now, being a good teammate and trying hard were all that really mattered. Well, thank you. I mean, you've given me a lot of confidence there. Still nerves, but like I think the effort thing is huge. Like I just want to be a good teammate and and really go out there and try. Excited to be a part of it with you, man. Thank you. Have a great day. Go get a bucket. Whoo. Okay, it starts now. It starts now. Okay. That's when I decided to tell people, tell everyone. I just found out I'm playing in my first basketball game ever. And I have less than two weeks until I'm going to be making my debut on the court. The response was crazy. Hundreds of DM's and messages giving advice, wishing me luck, and letting me know that the whole community was behind me. There's this creator Sam, AKA bench to Baller. He's showing up daily trying to make his league. I realized how for me, doing something that scared me, that was outside my comfort zone, was a really important message to share, and maybe others could relate.
[23:18]I trained hard on the things Brianna had told me, so much so that I was wearing a t-shirt outside at 0° Celsius. However, the game was going to go, the support I was receiving was motivating me to get better. I was even mentioned on a podcast. There's a kid on Instagram who is called bench to baller and he's started trying to teach himself basketball and he's documenting his journey. I think it's fantastic, right? He put out a video the other day talking about he's going to go play his first game. And because he's a huge Steph Curry fan, he's always just focused on people shooting. I just dropped him a message. I said to him, brother, all you need to do is rebound and defend. He should take short-term goals and just try to get into the game first. Yeah. Yeah. Despite getting no new records from the challenge, I was getting just as fired up from setting mini goals for myself and finishing workouts. Come on. As well as staying sharp on my threes, I really focused on ball handling, the mid-range shooting, and doing it all whilst being tired, which is something I hadn't really faced in the 10 threes challenge.
[24:25]Then just a couple of days before the game, my friend Ben was over from America. And to put everything I'd practiced in front of an actual defender, as well as defend myself, we played a one V one. Oh, he wants to he wants to attack first. This would tell me if I was ready or not. It was super slippery and if I'm honest, I remembered the feeling all those days ago when I got dunked on. It sounds stupid, but I didn't fully realize that having a defender in front of me would make that much difference. And when I was guarding Ben, it looked like I was that boy who just stepped on a court for the first time back in Spain. Oh, flipping it, that's embarrassing. But in the same way that I'd struggled before, I had to find that passion and joy I'd experienced from somewhere deep down and fight. Every time I lost the ball, I put that play behind me and tried to lock up on defense.
[25:15]Obviously Ben was better than me. He'd been playing all his life. But if I tried hard, I might be able to come back. I managed to get a couple of buckets and tied it up to where we played next score wins. When this happened. Yeah. One, two, three, four, one, two, one, two, one, two. Oh.
[25:43]I didn't grind out a victory because I was more skilled. I just tried really hard. Yeah, blame on the court. That's clever. Yeah, and my bag's actually super deep. Right, right. And so going into game day, that's what was on my mind. It was all about preparation. I wanted to be so locked in for the game. The day before, I even did an ice bath and sauna to try and make sure my body was prepared for something I'd never experienced before. Oh my gosh. I didn't know how physical it would be or even if I'd get in the game. I could be doing all of this for nothing. But that ice bath was so cold. It does feel amazing after though. You should try it. Keep the guard down straight.
[26:26]So it's five hours before the game and I get my jersey I'm wearing in the mail. Clutch timing. Then I just had to get the body warm, do a little solo shoot around, do some ball handling, layups, not trying to push my body. You want to play some ones? And then in classic fashion, I want to play some ones with a random guy who is sick. He definitely tired me out and handed me the L. But it fired me up and meant that when I tried to nap for the last few hours before heading to my game, my head was filled with sweet dreams of hitting threes. No it wasn't. I couldn't sleep, I was too excited. So I watched some Steph Curry highlights.
[27:33]Then I arrived and I felt like a kid who just walked in on my first day of school.
[27:44]Yeah, um, I'm not usually nervous like this. It's I don't know.
[27:51]I just stepped outside for a moment. Meeting Joel and my other teammates settled me down a bit, but the atmosphere was pretty intense.
[28:53]The start of the game was a blur. I was lost trying to make sense of all the bodies moving everywhere and finding my guy. And I was surprised by the physicality when I tried to get a rebound. But luckily, the very next possession, I recorded my first ever stats in organized basketball with a rebound. Then I got another. It gave me a lot of confidence, knowing that what I was doing was actually helping the team. I found myself at the top of the key and without hesitating, let it fly. I remember thinking the shot felt rushed with two people converging in on me. But the team was playing well, making buckets and getting stops, and I managed to get the ball to Joel. And then get a good look from the corner.
[29:41]Honestly, it felt like it was day one again. Airball.
[29:47]I'd built up this thing so much in my mind that my arms and legs all went like jelly. But I had to put it behind me and keep hustling. So what if I didn't hit a three? There would be other games, other chances. I'd keep training, keep shooting. Then after the ball went out of play and I had a chance to catch my breath, I kind of walked over to the corner to give the other guys some space. When the ball came in, I thought about going to the basket, but then quickly went back to the exact same spot I'd airballed from just minutes before.
