[0:00]The iron sword is just a more expensive stone sword. Sure, it does more damage, but when does it actually matter? Most mobs have 20 health, so it takes four hits or three crits to kill them with either of these swords. Pigs and cows have 10 health, so the crit with an iron sword does perfectly enough to not kill them. The iron sword is only viable against enemies outside of this HP amount. Against most enemies, the best weapon is the axe, which despite having smaller overall damage per second, kills most mobs the fastest. And that's because you're not going to run up to a mob, take out your weapon, and then start killing it, but rather have the axe out before even approaching the enemy. And you can make it even faster if, after the first axe crit, you switch to a sword and crit with the sword. In which case, the iron sword is again the same as a stone sword. The only time an iron sword is optimal is in Bedrock Edition, where for some reason it does seven damage, which is like a diamond sword in Java.
