[0:00]Hello, my name is Erin. We recently looked at how to add paragraph borders in Microsoft Word. Today we're going to look at how to add paragraph shading. We'll also look at how to remove paragraph shading. Like borders, paragraph shading can be used to highlight important information and add visual interest to your document. In addition, borders and shading can be combined to create a more dramatic effect. I'll be using Word for Microsoft 365. These steps also apply to Word for Mac and the one-time purchase versions of the software back to Word 2016. In addition, the steps will be similar in older versions of the software.
[0:51]To begin, select the paragraph or paragraphs to which you want to add the shading. Then, select the Home tab in the ribbon. From there, select the shading menu arrow. Avoid selecting the shading button itself, because it will automatically apply the most recently used color to your selected paragraph. Next, select a color from the shading drop-down menu. For additional options, select More Colors. When the Colors dialog box appears, select a standard color. Or, select the Custom tab, where you can click an area in the color palette and then use the slider on the right to modify the saturation and hue. Word for Mac users have more palette options, so they should explore the Colors dialog box. If you want to use a color code, such as RGB or Hex, you can enter that information into the text boxes. Mac users can do the same by selecting the Color sliders tab. When you're finished, select the OK button. The new shading should be applied to your paragraph.
[2:12]To remove paragraph shading, place your cursor in the paragraph, and then select the Home tab in the ribbon. Next, select the shading menu arrow, followed by No Color from the drop-down menu. The shading should be removed from your paragraph. And as always, save your file to save your changes.
