[0:00]In Chapter 5, we are introduced to a new character, Lily Lovebreads, who isn't just one of the best parts of the game in my opinion, but also has one of the most interesting stories. And so today, I'm going to dive into everything we know about Lily, her past, and who exactly she's meant to be. So, while in-game, Lily seems to be a little strange and unhinged. We aren't really told much about her on the surface. However, looking at the chapter's various lore notes, we get a much better idea on who Lily is. Oh, that's amazing! Next, we'll have to find the friends. Going chronologically, first off, we have this note that describes her original experiment plans in the works, outlined on August 6th of 1995. Just a couple days before the Hour of Joy, by the way, marking her as Experiment 1468 that reads, In accordance with prior conversation and critical feedback, proposed operational procedures and materials for Experiment 1468 have seen a radical shift. Rather than each strand of hair being comprised of a sequence of grafted finger bones and muscle in a loose hair facade, we've allocated horse hair (for its tensile strength, durability, and flexibility), an artificial bone construction, and various biological materials, which we've listed below. Neural integration protocols have shown promising responsiveness in trials, indicating the subject's cognitive link will extend naturally to the hair construct. In effect, Lily's mind will be able to manipulate each and every strand as if it were its own limb. As such, our crafting will need to be intricate and operated by our most delicate hands. Under Materials and Methods, it says, Ahead of August 20th's operation, extracted capillaries will be required for attenuation of pain responses and which is where the note cuts off. Now, this note basically describes how when these scientists were coming up with a plan to create Lily Lovebraids, they eventually had the idea to give her these iconic braids that she could move and control independently on her own, instead of like normal hair, obviously. However, what's interesting about this document is that these were simply plans to create Lily, Oh, Baby! So nice of you to join us for tea. with the operation set to start on August 20th of that year in 1995. Which obviously couldn't have happened since the Hour of Joy took out every employee days prior. Ooooh, please take me out of my case. Oooooh, please rescue the orphans. So then, how do we still have Lily here in the game? Well, in a cassette tape inside of Lily's Dollhouse, we actually fast-forward to sometime just after the Hour of Joy, featuring the character Ms. Gracie, who was a playtime employee that ran those conditioning videos to manipulate the children into forgetting their identity. However, in this tape, we hear her hiding out from the experiments, only to get attacked by them when they were trying to find her. *BANG* MS. GRACIE! OPEN THE DOOR, WE WON'T HURT YOU! They took apart Robertson. They literally took him apart, TODD! Just sit. Security forces will get you. DON'T TELL ME TO SIT, TODD! THESE LITTLE MONSTERS ARE TRYING TO KICK DOWN MY DOOR! OPEN THE DOOR, MS. GRACIE! WE JUST WANT TO PLAY! YEAH! THE FRIENDS ARE ALL HERE! LET'S SPREAD SOME JOY ALL OVER THAT ROOM! YOU HEAR THEM? TODD? *DISTORTED SOUNDS* TODD? *DOOR BREAKING* TODD! GET BACK! BACK! *SCREAMS* BABA I WAS JUST... I WAS JUST TRYING TO MAKE YOU ALL HAPPY! I WASN'T... PLEASE! DON'T HURT ME! WE ARE NOT GONNA HURT YOU MISS GRACIE. WE HAVE SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL PLANNED FOR YOU. *SCREAMING AND CRYING* So clearly they captured her and even mentioned having something "very special planned" for her. So then, what did they do with her body? They should be around somewhere, and I know they'd hate to miss this. Well, judged from Miss Gracie's voice sounding very similar to Lily's and the experiment plans for Lily laying around the factory, we can only assume that to punish Gracie for her involvement in the factory, they wanted to give her a taste of her own medicine by turning her into a toy, Lily Lovebraids. This is confirmed in another cassette tape where we actually hear Lily herself in one of the conditioning chambers, Ms. Gracie: Hey there. Wonderful. Do you want to feel comfortable? Do you want to feel safe? listening to her own voice. Hey there, friends! It's a sunny day. ...MS. GRACIE! YOU'RE MS. GRACIE! YOU HAVE A FIRST NAME, WHAT WAS IT? *BREATHING* UGHH, JUST IGNORE HER. SHE'S NOT REAL. IT'S ONLY YOU HERE. JUST... YOU AREN'T I REAL MS. GRACIE? MS. GRACIE SAYS I'M REAL. I--- AM MS. GRACIE, SNAP OUT OF IT! THIS IS SILLY! SILLY, SILLY, SILLY! SHE'S ON THE SCREEN. SHE'S NOT ACTUALLY IN THE ROOM WITH US. *BREATH* MY HANDS... PLASTIC... MY FACE... I THOUGHT... OH *LAUGH* HOW EMBARRASSING! I CAN'T BELIEVE I THOUGHT YOU WERE ACTUALLY THE REAL MS. GRACIE! EGG ON MY FACE! *LAUGHTER* OOOO! OOH, I LOVE HUGGY, AND I LOVE KISSY, AND I LOVE ALL THE FRIENDS! I WANNA GO HOME. NO, WE'RE GONNA HAVE A TEA PARTY! I LOVE TEA PARTIES! AND I LOVE CRUMPETS! PLEASE LET ME OUT! NO NO NO, WE CAN BRUSH OUR HAIR AND HANG WITH THE FRIENDS! *LAUGHTER* *BREATHES* Sink down and quiet. You are a toy. You have always been a toy. I... AM A TOY MS. GRACIE! I'M A GOOD TOY! I PROMISE! Now, this tape might be a little confusing because we hear Lily's voice multiple times. Dolly Grub, were you taking a bubble bath? Mmmmmm, vanilla. But basically, what we're hearing is Lily having some kind of identity crisis with herself. After watching these videos of herself, telling her to forget her own identity, Oh look who it is! Dusky, were you messing around in the garage? she was still somewhere in between the mind of Miss Gracie, but now the body of Lily Lovebraids. Remember, good toys wash their hands! Which obviously came with some huge consequences mentally, something that she still juggled with up until we see her in the game. It's okay. You're okay. Go back to sleep. Nobody's gonna hurt you anymore. Holding what appears to be the skeleton of her former body inside of her own bedroom, who she talks to and comforts like a totally separate creature. And furthermore, if you need even more explanation for her weird behavior, you might have noticed that previous tape was named '96 Isolation Day 122. And it's called that because the reason she was forced to watch these videos was because the Prototype locked her in there. Who, in another note, revealed that he isolated her for 410 days, being provided only the bare minimum resources, claiming she was childishly naive and wholly ignorant of her crimes. Saying that he later moved her, likely to the home she's at in Chapter 5, for space, but that this changes nothing. She will not be allowed to join us. She will not be allowed a quick death. This note makes complete sense from 1006. The Prototype didn't want to work with Lily since, after all, She was one of the people responsible for conditioning and making these toy creations. Instead, he wanted to punish her for what she did and give her a slow, painful existence that, mind you, could theoretically never end. Because in the Poppy Playtime universe, without destruction or malnutrition, the toys simply can't die. So, he really was torturing the heck out of her. Ms. Gracie: The friends all LOVE this game! Drop the block into the correct hole. However, nonetheless, she eventually moved over to her new home, taking place in a location called "Sweet Street," which is a super odd place because it appears to be very childlike and colorful. And the reason for this, from what I've gathered, is in the observation log from the place and a VHS tape sitting outside of it, we can discover that this building was essentially a large observatory, where the scientists could place an experiment inside what appeared to just be a home to hopefully calm them down, when working with subjects within a diorama, you need to fit in! make sure you've memorized necessary lines and have the correct outfit on while the scientists could watch them from close by in disguise. At first, when they tried placing subjects inside of this room, they noted that they were nervous, with persistent pacing and attempts to try and escape the area. failure to do so may aggravate our specimens. However, after a couple months, the tested subjects reportedly felt comfort in what they now believed to be their true home, allowing the staff to interact with them with minimal aggression, along with other benefits, like the experiments being more cooperative with the red smoke sedation. So, the place was deemed a success at calming down the experiments. Granted, there were some worries that if there was a breach in the trust and somehow the experiments found out that this was an entire facade, that it would then totally collapse. But now that Lily was inside, her mental battle only seemed to get worse. NO NO NO! You can't leave! The party hasn't even started! As with the Prototype and all of the other toys not liking her, she began to panic about nobody wanting to be her friend or visiting. And just where do you all think you're going? You wouldn't want to miss the Tea Party! Like in this note, she angrily wrote that he, likely meant to be the Prototype, still doesn't come and visit her. None of them will come. Why does everyone hate me? Seemingly in a fit of rage, breaking a hole in the aftermentioned facade before calming down and coming up with the idea to cover the hole with something. Anything will do. Maybe just a poster. Your favorite one — that's what you deserve for this. Don't let him see the mess you made. Never ever. This is interestingly the poster that we burn to get outside of her house in game as well, by the way. So, while this note is pretty ambiguous and they don't ever explicitly say who the person she's talking about in here is, I think the purpose of it was meant to show that Lily was getting increasingly lonely. On this is the best day of my life. All of the friends. Ah, I almost forgot, I need to get ready! She started having these tea parties with stuffed animals, I already mentioned the skeleton. Poppy: *Humming the Poppy theme* And despite her not even being liked by any of the other experiments, we saw her try to hide the mess that she made in the house, Shut it! You've always been a bad toy! When he gets here, he'll see it too! likely in an attempt to win them over. Clearly Lily was reaching a low point in her health, and one of the biggest examples of this is in one of her journal logs here, where she seems to have completely lost her identity. Calling herself Lily-Billy-Silly-Tilly. Then going on about why nobody seems to like her, saying, I sing and I dance, and I live like any good toy should. I want to share in it. To love like Ms. Gracie says to love. Who again was her, but at this point she seemingly doesn't realize. And yet, they all just scream and cry like horrible, wretched little things when they look at me. They look at me like I'm the bad toy. Then she seems to start talking to someone saying, But somehow, I know you don't think that. You'd never think that. You get me. Every day since I found you in the Pit tossed down like so much garbage, I've brushed your pretty hair, I've dressed you in pretty things, and I've given you pretty flowers... You're more than just a friend to Silly-Lily, which I guess is another name she calls herself. The sound of your voice is what I was born from, the voice I still hear singing when I feel so alone, and that's special for both of us. In your own little ways, I think you tell me that you agree. I'm very glad you're here to share this dance with me. Silly-Lily. Now, to be honest, at this point in her mental state, I can't really make heads or tails on who she's meant to be talking about here. Could it be Poppy? Because at some point she does capture Poppy and maybe she was delusional enough to think Poppy was her friend. Was it maybe one of the dolls that she befriended? I don't think they're here for the party, Lily. The Candycat head that she kept in her hair? Or maybe more disturbingly, is she simply just referring to herself, brushing her own hair and just doesn't understand who she is anymore? Ooh, please blow up the whole factory and BURN. EVERYONE. ALIVE. She did say here that the sound of the person's voice is what she was born from, so maybe she's referencing the Miss Gracie tapes. My my, aren't you impressive!
[12:25]Either way, it's super, super creepy. And for the most part, that brings us to her physical appearance in the game. I don't think they're here for the party, Lily. Where finally, after waiting for so long, she had friends to help her start a party for a special guest. Ooh, please blow up the whole factory and BURN. EVERYONE. ALIVE. The Prototype, who finally makes an appearance as well. She seems overjoyed at this moment. SURPRISE!
[12:44]However, when the Prototype crashes the party and destroys her little candy friend, I built us a home and kept us safe. And you repaid me by bringing in an outsider. out of rage, she tried to chase us down and eventually we escaped, getting Lily to fall from this cloud platform that dropped and killed her. RUN! I let you into my house. I let you come to my TEA PARTY.
[13:02]Which was a moment that I initially found pretty satisfying. When I don't get my beauty sleep, I turn into a big old grumpy bum. But after hearing about all of the isolation and torture that she went through building up to this, On this is the best day of my life. All of the friends. Ah, I almost forgot, I need to get ready! and just seeing the descent into madness from a mostly regular human being to a completely lost toy that can't even recognize herself. I don't think they're here for the party, Lily. It honestly makes me feel somewhat bad for her. I know she was probably responsible for doing this with thousands of other children in her conditioning videos. When I don't get my beauty sleep, I turn into a big old grumpy bum.
