[0:20]Zafarnamah an Epistle of Victory a letter written in Persian verses by Guru Gobind Singh Ji to the contemporary Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1705 from Dina now in District Moga Eastern Punjab after the martyrdom of his four sons in Chamkaur and Sirhind. [0:59]Kamale karamaat kayam kareem. Razabakshe razak rahakun Raheem. He is the protector and helper. He is compassionate, the giver of victuals, and the enticer. Khata baksha rozi de ho dilpazeer. The Almighty is perfect in all faculties. He is immortal and generous. He is the Giver of victuals and is the emancipator. Shahenshahe khubide ho rehnamu, ke beguno bechunno be namu. Through his generosity, he provides heavenly enjoyments to one without any wealth, falcon, army property and authority. Na sazo na bazo na fajo na furush. Khudawand bakshinde asho aursh. He is the Transcendent as well as immanent. He is omnipresent and bestows honors. Jahanpak zeerast zahir zahoor. Ata baheedhad hamchuga hazoor. He is holy, generous and preserver. He is merciful and giver of victuals. Ata baksh o pak Parvardigaar. Raheemast rozi dahad har dehaar. The Almighty is generous, the highest of the high. He is most beautiful. Ke husnaljamal ast razik Raheem. Ke sahib shaurast ajiz navaz. The Almighty is omniscient, the protector of the lowly. The friend of the poor is the destroyer of the enemies. Gharibal parasto Ganimul gudaz. Shariyat parasto fazilat maaf. He is the source of all virtues, keeper of Dharma. He knows everything and is the source of all scriptures. Hakekat shanaso Nabiyul kitab. Ke danish peyu hast sahib shaur. He is the perfect being and treasure of wisdom. He, the all-pervading Lord is omniscient. Hakikat shanasast zahir zahoor. Shanasandaye Ilme alam khudae. The Lord of the Universe, knows all the sciences and breaks the knot of all complications. Kasha indaye kar-e-alam kushae. Guzaranday-e-kar-e-alam kabeer. He, the supreme and most high, supervises the whole world. He, the sovereign of all learning is the knower. Shanasandaye Ilme alam ameer. Mara etbar bardi kasme neest. O Aurangzeb, I do not have faith in your oaths. The Lord himself is the witness of that. Ke Yazdan gawah ast Yazdan Yaqeen. Na Katrah mara etbar baroast. I have not an iota of faith in such a person, whose officers have relinquished the path of truth. Ke bakshi wadivahan magizboast. Kas e Kaole Quran kunad etbar. Whosoever puts faith into your oath of the Quran, he is subjected to punishment on the final reckoning. Hamaroz aakhir shavad Mardkhwar. Huma ra kas-e-saya ayad bazair. He, who comes under the shade of the legendary Huma, a very brave bird cannot harm him. Baro dast darad na zago dalair. Kas-e-pusht uftad pas-e-sher nar. The goat, sheep and deer do not go near him. Na girad bozo mesho ahuguzar. Kasam Musahef-e-khas gardi khoram. If I had not taken an oath on Quran in concealment, I would not have moved an inch from my place. Na fouj-e-azeem ra shum afganam. Gursana che kar-e-kunad chehal nar. How could forty famished persons fight in the battlefield, on whom ten lac soldiers made a sudden attack. Ke Dah Lakh bar ayad baro bekabar. Ke peyman shikan bedarang amadand. Your army breaking the oath and in great haste plunged in the battlefield with arrows and guns. Me amad goteero tufang amadand. Ba lacharagi darmiyan amadama. It was out of sheer helplessness that I came in the battle field. For this reason, I had to intervene and had to come fully armed. Ba tadbeer-e-teero kaman amadama. Chu kar az hama heelate darguzashat. When all other methods of communication have failed, it is righteous to take the sword in hand. Halal ast burdan ba shamshir dast. Che kasme Quran man kunam etbar. I have no faith in your oaths on the Quran. Otherwise I had nothing to do with this battle. Wagarna tu guyee mani ra che kar. Na danam ke een mard raya peech. I did not think your officers would be deceitful. Otherwise I would not have followed the path I have taken. Digar hargiz ee rah na ayama hech. Harankas ke kaole Quran ayadash. For those persons who have put their faith on the oaths of the Quran, it is not right to imprison and kill them. Na zad basto no kushtno ba ayadash. Ba rang-e-magas siyahe posh amadand. The soldiers of your army, clad in black uniforms, rushed like flies on my men. They came at us making loud noises. Ba yakbargi dar khorosh amadand. Harankas ze deewar amad baroon. Whosoever appeared near the wall of the fort, with my one arrow he was drenched in his own blood. Ba khurdan yake teer shud gharq-e-khoon. Ke bairon ni amad kase za deewar. Thereafter, no one dared to come there near the wall. None faced then the arrows and destruction. Na khurdand teero na kushtand khar. Chu didam ke Nahar bi amad ba jang. When I saw Nahar Khan in the battlefield, he was greeted with one of my arrows. Chashida yak-e-teer-e-man bedarang. Ham aakhir gurezat ba ja-e-muqam. All those boasters who came near the wall, they were dispatched in no time. Bashekhana khurdand be run azam. Ke Afghan digar bi amad ba jang. Another Afghan, with a bow and arrow came in the battlefield like a flood. Chu saile ravan hamchu teero tufang. Bashe hamla kardan ba mardanagi. He shot arrows heroically, sometimes in senses and sometimes in madness. Hamaz hoshgi hams deewanagi. Bashe hamla kardand bashe zakhm khurd. He made several attacks and was drenched with blood. He killed two (of my) men and also gave his own life as well. Do kas ra ba jaan kushto jaan ham supurd. Ke o Khwaja Mardud say-e-deewar. Khwaja Marhud hid himself behind the wall. He did not enter the field like a brave warrior. Ba maidan na amad ba mardanwar. Dareega agar rue o didemin. If I had seen his face once, one of my arrows would have dispatched him to the abode of death. Ba yakteer lachar bakshideh meen. Ham aakhir bashe zakhm teero tufang. Many warriors wounded with arrows and bullets died in the battle on both the sides. Dosue bashe kushta shud bedarang. Bashe barbarida teero tufang. The darts were showered so violently, that the field became red like poppyflowers. Zamin gasht hamchu gule lal-e-rang. Sarobapaye ambu ba chandoh shude. The heads and limbs of the dead were scattered in the battlefield. Which gave impression that these are balls and sticks. Ke maidan pur az goy-e-chogan shude. Tarang kare teero tarange kaman. When the arrows hissed and bows tinkled, there was a great hue and cry in the world. Baroohai ha-o-hoo az Jahan. Digar sureshe ke bar-e-kine kosh. There the spears and lances provided a dreadful sound and the warriors lost their senses. Ba mardan-e-mardau ghurur raft hosh. Ham aakhir che mardi kunad karazar. How could bravery ultimately withstand in the field, when only forty were surrounded by innumerable warriors. Ke bar chehal tan ayadash beshumar. Charag-e-jahan chu shuda burka posh. When the lamp of the world veiled itself, the moon shone in brightness during the night. Saha-e-shab bar amad hameh jan feroosh. Har an kas ke kaole Quran ayadash. He, who puts faith on the oaths of the Quran, the true Lord him the guidance. Ke Yazdan baro rahnuma ayadash. Na peechida muye na ranjida tan. There was neither any harm nor injury. My Almighty, the vanquisher of the enemies, brought me to safety. Ke beru-e-khud aurd Dushman shikan. Na danam ke ee mard paiman shikan. I did not know that these oath-breakers were deceitful and flowers of mammon. Ke daulat parastast ee ma fikan. Na ee ma parasti na auza-e-deen. They were neither men of faith, nor true followers of Islam, they did not know the Lord nor had faith in the prophet. Na sahib shanasi Mohammad yaqeen. Harankas ke ee ma parasti kunad. He, who follows his faith with sincerity, he never budges an inch from his oaths. Na peenad khudash pesho past hi kunad. Ke ee no mard ra zarra etbar-e-neest. I have no faith at all in such a person for whom the oath of the Quran has no significance. Che kasme Quran ast Yazdan yaqeen. Chu kasme Quran sad kunad ikhtiar. Even if you swear a hundred times in the name of the Quran, I shall not trust you now even for a single drop of mine. Mara katra nayad az o etbar. Hazuri na ayam na een rah shavam. I will neither come to see nor come to your court. Wherever the King says I will not go. Agar shah ba khwahat na aanja ravam. Khush ast shahe shahan Aurangzeb. O Aurangzeb, the King of kings, has sent a message that he is very much grieved. Ke chalaak dast ast chabuk rakeb. Ke husn al Jamal ast roshan zameer. Aurangzeb is beauty personified. He is bright minded and he is the lord of his riches. Khudawand e mulk ast o sahib ameer. Ba tarteeb danish ba tadbeer tegh. Aurangzeb is wise and knowledgeable and is skillful wielder of the sword. Khudavand-e-dego khudavand-e-tegh. Ke roshan zameer ast husn al Jamal. Aurangzeb is handsome and possesses a brilliant mind. You are bountiful in distributing the riches of his kingdom. Khudavand e bakshinda e mulko mal. Ke bakhshish kabeer ast dar jang koh. Aurangzeb's magnificence is great. In war he is like a mountain. He has the attributes of angels and his splendor matches the Pleiades. Malayak sifat chu Suraiya sh koh. Shahenshahe Aurangzeb aalemeen. Aurangzeb is the king of kings, lord of the world and has all the riches. But you are away from the teachings of your religion. Ke dara-e-daur ast durasht deen. Manam kushtnam Kohi aa Bat parast. I am also the annihilator of the hill rajas, the idol worshipers. They are idol worshipers and I am engaged in defeating the very concept of idol worship. Ke o bat parastand man but shika. Bebin gardish-e-bewafaye zaman. Look at the turn of unfaithful world. When it sets itself after some one it inflicts injury and does harm to him. Pas-e-pusht uftad rasanad zi an. Debin qudrat-e-nek Yazdan-e-pak. Look at the powerful and good Lord. His reach is such that He can get ten lac annihilated by only one. Ke az yak zabakh dalak rasanad halak. Che Dushman kunad mehrban ast dost. What can the enemy do when the Almighty Lord is kind? That He is generous and always forgiving. Ke bakhshindagi kar bakhshinda oast. Rehayee deho rahnuma-e-dehad. He gives us guidance and delivers us from this world. He lets us sing praises for his benevolence showered upon us. Zabanu ra ba siffat ashna-e-dehad. Ghasam ra chukoro kunad wakt-e-kar. In time of need, He blinds the enemy and takes out the helpless without any injury to him even from a thorn. Yateema baro burd be zakhm-e-khar. Har ankas ke za rast bazee kunad. The Compassionate Lord always showers mercy upon the person who is under the path of truthfulness. Raheem-e-baro raham sazee kunad. Kas-e-khidmat ayad ba se qalbo jan. Anyone who serves the Almighty with total devotion is blessed with peace and tranquility. Khudavand bakhsheed bar o aman. Che Dushman bar aan heel-e-sazi kunad. What deception can an enemy inflict on a person who is under the protection of Lord Himself. Ke bar o Khuda chare sazee kunad. Agar bar yak ayad da ho dad Hazar. If one lac strong enemy attacks a single loved one, the Almighty protects and does not allow any harm to visit him. Nigahban o ra shavad kirdgar. Dusmani gar hazar awardad. If the enemy brings thousands of his men against an individual, (who has the protection of the Almighty) not even a single hair of his will be harmed. Na yak muye o ra hazar awardad. Dusmani gar hazar awardad. If the enemy brings thousands of his men against an individual, (who has the protection of the Almighty) not even a single hair of his will be harmed.
