People have a tendency to follow the trends because they are popular and they express social influence. Because of the social influence, trends tend to be well discussed and covered in the media, making them even more popular. So let's take a look at some ongoing trends. Since the launch of the iPhone, the mobile phone market and how we use and interact with phones has changed forever. It has now become a trend to launch a new smartphone every year with ever growing feature list and more and more applications. And people chase the latest phones. This, to a certain extent, seems to represent their social status, and it keeps the people's self-esteem up. Trends are also really powerful. You could use three to four years old smartphone and accomplish everything that the latest model does, but people still want the newest one, even if they have to pay two to three times more. Trends are everywhere we look. It used to be a trend to go to Blockbuster and rent a movie for a weekend, but now everyone has a Netflix. Some time ago, the only way to stay somewhere was to rent a hotel room, but now it is a trend for people to stay in Airbnb. This is exactly what I did when I was traveling around the world for one year and living two months on each continent. You don't always have to follow the trends, but if you can see the trends, then you can also spot many opportunities.
