[0:04]Hi guys and welcome to your first German class. My name is Jenny, I'm the co-founder of Lingoni, and I will also be your German teacher. In this lesson, you're going to learn your first 15 German words. Let's take a closer look. The first word I'm going to teach you is "ja", which means yes. Ja. The German J is pronounced like the English Y. Ja. Ja. Very easy. Ja. The second word I'm going to teach you is "nein", which means no. Nein. Ja - nein. Ja - nein. The third word is a little more difficult: "vielleicht", which means maybe. Vielleicht. Vielleicht. The German V is pronounced like the English F. Vielleicht, so it's not "vielleicht", that's wrong, it's "vielleicht". In German, there are three articles. We have a masculine article, a feminine article, and a neutral article. So if you want to say "the" in German, you have to decide whether to use "der", "die", or "das". Der - the R is not pronounced. Der. Die. Die. Das. Das. Der, die, das. Der, die, das. Now I'm going to teach you your first noun: "das Auto", the car. Das Auto. You may know that from a pretty famous commercial. Das Auto. Another important word is "wo", which means where. The German W is pronounced like the English V. Wo. Wo. Now I'm going to teach you your first question in German. Wo ist das Auto?
[2:19]Wo ist das Auto? You may guess what that means because I taught you what "wo" means and I taught you what "das Auto" means. And "ist" is almost identical to the English word "is". So it means "where is the car?" Wo ist das Auto? The next word: "ich". Ich. This means I. Ich. The "ch" is very soft. It's not "itsch" or "ick", that's a very common mistake. It's "ich", like huge. Ich. Ich. I also want to teach you a sentence today. I want to teach you how to say "I'm learning German" or "I'm studying German". In German, we say, "I learn German." Ich lerne Deutsch. Ich lerne Deutsch. So this means I learn German or I study German, or I'm learning German or I'm studying German. Ich lerne Deutsch. Lerne is a verb. The infinitive of "lerne" is "lernen". An infinitive is the basic form of a verb, just like in English: to learn, to study, to do, to make. That's an infinitive. Ich lerne Deutsch, and the infinitive of "lerne" is "lernen". Make sure to take some notes because I'm not sure if you're going to remember all of this at the end of the lesson, so make sure to take some notes and do some review. Now I'm going to teach you another noun: der Mann, which means the man. Der Mann. You may have noticed from the subtitles that nouns in German are capitalized. So the M is capitalized, der Mann. Mann is masculine, of course, so we have to use the masculine article, der. The next noun would be "Frau", die Frau. Die Frau. Die is feminine, Frau is feminine, die Frau. You have to roll the R at the back of your throat, "frr", "ffr", Frau. This takes a bit of practice and if you can't do it right now, don't worry about it. If you want to say "in the car", in German you would say "im Auto". Im Auto. In the car are three words, and "im Auto" are two words, how come? Well, "im" is actually a contraction. It's made up of the two words "in dem", "in dem". But this is already pretty specific and we're going to learn more about that in a future lesson. So don't worry too much about it, just remember that "im" means "in the". So if you want to say, "the man is in the car", you have to say: der Mann ist im Auto.
[5:26]Die Frau ist im Auto.
