[1:10]So with that said, let's get into the pros and the cons of living in Rockport, Texas.
[1:15]Now, let's start with one of the biggest draws to Rockport is its coastal lifestyle.
[1:20]And if you've ever thought of living near the water, Rockport offers the perfect opportunity for you.
[1:28]This small town is all about just enjoying life by the coast, whether you're fishing out on the bays, kayaking or simply just soaking up the sun on the beach.
[1:38]There's always something to do outdoors and Rockport is known for its incredible fishing spots, really attracting Anglers from all over.
[1:47]And you have so many local bait shops there. It's just easy to gear up and hit the water whenever you want.
[1:54]And if you're into boating, the easy access to the Gulf really makes it a great location for you.
[1:59]And another highlight is Rockport Beach. It's a well-maintained beach and this is a spot where you can relax and just enjoy the water.
[2:08]And it's a favorite among locals looking for just a peaceful day by the coast and what makes it even better is the laidback vibe here in Rockport.
[2:18]It's a more of a retire re-town really offering a peaceful, calm atmosphere for those who are looking to slow down and enjoy life by the water.
[2:28]While it is usually quiet, you do have holiday weekends and summer and annual festivals that can make it more of a busier spot bringing in visitors.
[2:38]So other than that, Rockport's relaxed atmosphere and coastal living make it a wonderful place to call home.
[2:45]Now, let's talk about another reason people are drawn to Rockport is its affordability.
[2:52]Rockport stands out as a more affordable option compared to other coastal areas like Port Aransas or even North Padre Island.
[3:01]Because the average home price in Rockport is around 420,000, while nearby areas like North Padre is averaging around 550,000 right now.
[3:12]And Port Aransas is even higher at 638,000 right now.
[3:18]This makes Rockport more of an attractive choice for buyers who still want the perks of coastal living without that higher price tag.
[3:24]And the town does offer a variety of housing options from older homes that are full of charm to newer builds with modern features.
[3:32]Whether you're looking for a charming little cottage or a modern new build or even waterfront property, Rockport offers something for everyone.
[3:41]And if you're thinking about waterfront living, Rockport does have options for you, but depending on the home and the location and how close you are to the water, the higher the price point tends to be, so just keep that in mind.
[3:54]And if you're curious about what it is really like to live here and the cost of living, be sure to check out my video where I break down the cost of living in Rockport.
[4:04]I cover the utilities, the housing costs, health care costs and it just helps you get a more full picture of what you can expect cost wise.
[4:13]Another big reason people love Rockport is the strong sense of community that you're going to find here.
[4:19]Rockport really offers a true small town feel where neighbors know each other and support one another.
[4:27]Whether it's through local events, casual meetups or shared interests, it's really easy to form connections here.
[4:34]And the town hosts plenty of monthly market days where local vendors come together to showcase their goods from homemade crafts to fresh produce, really creating opportunities for residents to gather and connect with their neighbors.
[4:51]Now, these market days give Rockport a unique charm and they're a great way to enjoy the creativity and talents of the community.
[5:01]Rockport is also home to many annual festivals like Oysterfest, Seafair and Crawfish Fest, which draw both locals and visitors for great food, live music, family-friendly fun.
[5:17]And fishing enthusiasts will also appreciate events like fishing tournaments and Babes on the Bay is one of the largest all women fishing tournaments in Rockport, which brings people together to celebrate the town's love for fishing and coastal living.
[5:30]And beyond these events, the slower pace of life here in Rockport fosters a welcoming atmosphere.
[5:38]So whether you're volunteering somewhere, you're attending a local gathering, or you're simply stopping to chat with a neighbor at a coffee shop in town, you'll quickly feel like you'll belong.
[5:50]And if you're looking for a town where community does matter, then Rockport is a great option to consider.
[5:59]It offers a lifestyle filled with opportunities to connect and just enjoy life. Next, I want to talk about one of the bigger draws to Rockport is its natural beauty and variety of outdoor activities that it has to offer.
[6:11]Because Rockport is surrounded by stunning natural beauty that really creates a great backdrop for outdoor adventures.
[6:20]And one of the highlights in Rockport is Rockport Beach. Like I mentioned earlier, it's a clean and peaceful spot where you can simply relax, you can take a stroll by the water, or enjoy a picnic with family and friends.
[6:33]And keep in mind that access to Rockport Beach does require a pass.
[6:38]You can purchase a daily pass for about $10 or opt in for a yearly pass for about $40, which is perfect for locals who want to enjoy the beach regularly.
[6:50]And unlike Port Aransas Beach where you can drive directly on there, you cannot drive onto Rockport Beach.
[7:00]You'll need to park and then carry your beach supplies, but just know Rockport Beach does have amenities like teepee huts along the beach and picnic tables located just off the parking area, making it easy to enjoy your day by the water.
[7:13]And for my nature lovers, Goose Island State Park is just a short drive away and it offers incredible opportunities to do some camping, bird watching and just soak in the coastal scenery.
[7:27]The park is also a home to the famous big tree, which is one of the largest and oldest live oaks in the country.
[7:34]And since this is a state park, there is an entry fee. It's about $5 per day for anyone 13 years and older.
[7:42]The gate is open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. So you'll have plenty of of time to enjoy everything that the park has to offer.
[7:51]And for my golfers out there, Rockport does have a country club. It's called Live Oak Country Club, and it includes a nine-hole course and a driving range for those who want to practice their swing.
[8:05]And beyond these outdoor adventures, Rockport's charm really extends to its art district and downtown area.
[8:11]And the art district is perfect for exploring galleries, workshops and creative spaces that really showcase the town's vibrant artistic culture.
[8:21]And downtown Rockport offers a mix of shops, local restaurants and a laidback vibe that just makes it great for a casual day out.
[8:31]And whether you're exploring local parks, you're casting a line, or you're checking out the art district or just spending some time downtown, Rockport really combines the natural beauty with outdoor activities and small town charm to create a lifestyle that is truly special.
[8:50]While Rockport's natural beauty and outdoor activities are major draw to some people, the town's vibrant arts and culture scene adds a whole another layer to its charm.
[9:03]And that really gets me into my last Pro because Rockport isn't just about the great outdoors.
[9:08]It's also a town with a rich and thriving arts community. And at the heart of this is the Rockport Center for the Arts, which features three galleries, workshops and classes all throughout the year.
[9:21]And whether you're an artist or you are simply someone who enjoys creative expression, it's a fantastic place to get inspired or learn something new.
[9:32]And beyond the Center for the Arts, you have Rockport that is home to more than 15 art galleries, really showcasing a variety of styles and mediums.
[9:41]And if you stroll through the art district, that's a great way to connect with the local culture and see why Rockport has been recognized as one of the top 10 artist colonies in the country by Coastal living.
[9:57]And the art scene really isn't limited just to the galleries, but public art and murals throughout the town really add color and character to Rockport streets, making it even more enjoyable to explore.
[10:11]And the town also hosts annual events like the Rockport Art Festival, which isn't just about art, but it also includes live music, you have local food vendors and activities for all ages.
[10:24]And for those who are looking to get hands-on, like I mentioned earlier, the Rockport Center for the Arts offers workshops and classes for all ages, really making creatively accessible to everyone in the community.
[10:37]And Rockport is a town where art isn't just appreciated, but it really is celebrated and shared, contributing to the unique lifestyle that Rockport has to offer.
[10:48]Now, as much as Rockport has so many wonderful things to offer, no place is perfect. It's always important to weigh both the pros and the cons before deciding if it's the right fit for you.
[11:01]So, let's talk about a few of the challenges that you might face living in Rockport. And like any small coastal town, Rockport does have its own downsides.
[11:11]While these might not be deal breakers for everyone, they are still definitely worth considering if you are planning a move here.
[11:21]And one of the first downsides of living in Rockport is the limited dining options.
[11:28]Now, the town does have a variety of locally owned restaurants and they are amazing.
[11:34]And they serve everything from seafood, Mexican, Vietnamese, Italian, and classic American dishes. It's not like a bigger city where you're going to find endless choices or numerous chain restaurants.
[11:46]Now, there are a few fast food chain in town including Sonic, McDonald's, Waterburger, Taco Bell, and Popeyes, but those provide a little convenience if you're looking for larger food chains like Texas Roadhouse or Cheesecake Factory, even BJ's Brewhouse, you're going to have to travel to Corpus to find those and that's about a 40 to 50 minute drive.
[12:10]And a few of the local restaurants in Rockport, keep in mind, they don't open until the afternoon for dinner service, and some of the restaurants are actually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, which can make dining out a little more challenging at certain times.
[12:26]So if you enjoy supporting the local eateries and don't mind planning around their hours or driving to Corpus for more of a variety, this may not be a big issue to you, but it is something worth keeping in mind.
[12:40]And another challenge of living in Rockport is the limited entertainment options.
[12:47]While the town offers a relaxing coastal lifestyle, it doesn't have the same variety of activities that you're going to find in a larger city.
[12:54]For example, Rockport used to have a movie theater, but it was replaced by a furniture or a mattress store, leaving the residents without a local cinema in town.
[13:04]So if you want to see a new movie that's coming out, you're going to have to drive to Aransas Pass, which is about 20 minutes up the road.
[13:11]And if you're looking for a concert venue or larger live entertainment events, you're going to be heading to Corpus, which is about 40 to 50 minutes away.
[13:19]And offers venues for big name performances, comedy shows and other large-scale events, but that being said, Rockport does have its own charm when it comes to entertainment.
[13:30]There are local bars with local music where you can enjoy a drink and unwind in the evening.
[13:38]And the town does host plenty of annual festivals, art exhibits and fishing tournaments that bring the community together.
[13:46]But if you're someone who enjoys busier, fast-paced lifestyle, then the quieter pace of Rockport might take some time to adjust to.
[13:55]Now that we've talked a little bit about the entertainment options, I want to shift gears to another potential downside to you, which is the shopping options in Rockport.
[14:06]And if you're someone who enjoys a wider variety of shopping options in Rockport, I might feel a little bit limited to you.
[14:12]Because the town has local boutiques, you know, grocery stores like an HB and Walmart and a few smaller retail shops, but it doesn't have the large shopping centers or big box stores like a Target, a Sam's Club or even a Best Buy just right down the road from you.
[14:30]And for more expensive shopping trips, you're going to find yourself heading to Corpus, which is about 40 to 50 minutes away.
[14:38]And Corpus offers larger malls like La Palmera Mall, chain retailers, and specialty stores that aren't in Rockport.
[14:46]And one of the perks that Rockport has a smaller shopping scene though, it is the charm of its local businesses.
[14:55]From the unique boutiques, the locally owned gift shops, you can often find one of a kind items and just support the local community at the same time.
[15:03]But if you're someone who prefers the convenience of large retail chain or frequent shopping trips, then the limited options in Rockport might feel like a drawback.
[15:16]After covering shopping options, it's important to look at another aspect in life in Rockport, what the job market has to offer.
[15:26]And another downside of living in Rockport is the limited job market, because as a smaller coastal town, the local economy is largely centered around key industries like tourism, fishing and small businesses.
[15:38]But there are some significant employers in the area, including the school district, the city and county offices and major retail stores like HB and Walmart, which provide steady job opportunities.
[15:52]But for those in specialized fields or seeking higher pay corporate positions, commuting to Corpus, which is about 40 to 50 minutes away, might be necessary.
[16:04]Rockport's job market may work well with retirees, remote workers, or for those employed in the local industries, but if you're moving here for work, then it's something to consider and research.
[16:18]That being said, the small town lifestyle is one of Rockport's key appeals and for many residents, the trade-off of fewer job opportunities is worth it to enjoy the peace and charm of the community.
[16:32]Well, employment options are something to think about, another important consideration when living in a coastal town like Rockport is the risk of flooding and storms.
[16:43]Now, living in Rockport means embracing the coastal living, but it also comes with the potential for weather related challenges.
[16:51]And one of the biggest concerns is the risk of flooding and storms, especially during hurricane season.
[16:59]And in 2017, Rockport was faced with severe impact of Hurricane Harvey, which caused widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure.
[17:10]And the city has came a long way in rebuilding, but the risk of heavy storms really remains part of life here.
[17:20]And flooding is not just limited to homes, but many roads closer to the water are prone to flooding, especially during heavy rainfall, which can make it difficult to get in and out of your home.
[17:33]Now, flood insurance is often a necessity, and the cost can vary depending on your home's elevation and location.
[17:40]But Rockport has a well-established emergency management system, and residents are encouraged to have an evacuation plan in place ahead of storm season.
[17:51]And community organizations and local authorities will help provide guidance and resources for storm preparation.
[17:59]Despite all of these challenges, Rockport residents are known for their resilience and the community continues to rebuild and improve storm preparedness efforts.
[18:10]And for many, the beauty and charm of coastal living are worth the extra precautions, but it's something every potential resident should keep in mind.
[18:21]So that wraps up our discussion on the pros and the cons of living in Rockport, Texas.
[18:27]We've covered the town's natural beauty, the outdoor activities, and its thriving arts and culture scene.
[18:34]The strong sense of community it has, the affordable living and the access to local seafood and outdoor adventures are definitely highlights of Rockport.
[18:43]But on the flip side, we also discussed some of the challenges including the limited dining and entertainment options, the smaller job market and the risk of flooding and storms, especially during hurricane season.
