[0:00]Hi guys, welcome back to the channel. So, as you've seen, we're working on a mini series. Um, Sam's been beavering away, working really hard and, uh, we'll hopefully get these videos out to over the next few weeks and hopefully they'll help anyway. So over to you, Sam.

[0:32]Big one. So, this is like the official welcome to the next um, I suppose like a little mini series for the channel. Um, what what's happening is my partner's got a N47 engine BMW Mini SD. And um anyone that knows those engines knows they can be a bit notorious for certain things, namely Dual Mass flywheel and Timing Chain of which this needs both unfortunately. However, to get to the timing chain, you need to really take the engine out. Some people say you can do it in situ, I'm going to be taking the engine out just for ease of access. Um, and to get to the timing chain, you have to take the clutch and that off anyway, so it made sense to just do it all in one hit. Now, I've been gathering all the bits to do this over the past couple of weeks. Um, I'll give you a breakdown of what it's cost me so far, what I've had quoted from garages and how much I'm sort of hoping to save by doing it myself. Um, yeah, we'll get into that, so basically, welcome to the new mini series. First things first, we are going to need some tools and we're going to need some parts. There we go. Right then, so let's have a walk through what we've assembled here for the job. Uh, these are all the things that I've thought we'd probably need, um, we might need more, we might need less, I'm not sure, but um it's all, you know, I've been racking my brains to think of all the jobs and parts that are going to be like to need. So, most obvious engine crane, I got that on Facebook market. There's the legs down there. Um, we've got our axle stands, jack.

[2:29]We've got ratchet gun and various other tools. Um, down here, Clutch Flywheel. I can't remember which way around they are. Um, the big one's the flywheel, it weighs an absolute ton. Uh, we have got Inlet manifold gaskets, which are just blown everywhere. Inlet manifold gaskets, we've got new injector copper seals. We have got new flywheel bolts, there's apparently they're stretch bolts. Rear main oil seal that goes in the uh timing chain cover. We have got a new timing chain kit, which includes most all we need, hopefully everything. Some gasket stuff that's apparently very good. Uh, and probably most importantly we've got the timing chain kit itself. I'll break that down at some stage, we'll have a look what's inside. In these boxes here, these are like some of the specialist tools that I've got for the job. We've got an injector seat cutting tool slash finishing tool just to make sure those copper washers don't end up passing, we get leaks. And in here, we have got probably the most important thing. We've got our N47 BMW engine timing chain camshaft crankshaft locking kit. Um, it looks pretty good quality actually. It's it was only an eBay job. Hopefully it'll be um all right and precise enough. I'm sure it will, they sell thousands of these things. It'll be fine. And in here, we have got an injector pulling kit, just like a little slide hammer with various attachments and stuff just in case we have some stubborn injectors, which I'm sure we will.

[4:31]And what I haven't got here is oil, filters, all that sort of good stuff. I'm hoping to save the antifreeze, um, just so I don't have to buy new stuff. And then I'll just strain it back in if I can get it into a bucket or something. Um, but yeah, that's most of what we've got. I'll give you a breakdown of what it's what it's all cost, etcetera, and the savings I've done it itself um uh over taking it to a garage, sorry. And yeah, I don't know how many episodes it's going to be, probably four or five, maybe, once I get the engine out, we'll we'll see. We'll see, but yeah, let's crack on. So, I just made a start. What I'm going to try and do is leave the bonnet on. Um, it opens pretty wide anyway, so I don't think I'm going to need to take it off. Uh, the reason being the British autumn time. Uh, it could rain any second and I really don't want to be getting electrics and stuff wet under there. So, I'm going to be trying my absolute best to leave the bonnet on. Um, just thought I'd show you the lights quickly, I know it's going slightly off topic, but, um, at the back of the lights you've got this little um, clip for the screen wash. Um, it just you just push that little clip up there to take it off and you've got one plug on the back. Now they've got these weird, um, sort of fittings for the light bolts and I had a real nightmare trying to get one out the other day, cuz, well, it's easier for show you. So I can bring you to one that I've got off. Now, these just sort of like not that one.

[6:16]These sit inside like a plastic, um, and the plastic spins in uh sorry the metal spins inside the plastic and you can't take them out. So, I thought I was going to have to cut it off at one stage when I was taking this out before to do an engine mount. Um, however, this might save someone a lot of time and agony. If you look here, so here's one that's in one piece which I've greased up. You see there's like a metal insert inside the plastic, that ends up spinning and it's a nightmare to get out, you can actually release this whole thing by this little um Allen key here. Um, and it sort of slides out. Now, I couldn't see that with the light sitting here, so it was it took me about an about an hour to figure it out but, now I can see it, it all looks so simple.

[7:04]The first rainstorm of many, I should imagine. You see why I wanted to keep the bonnet on.

[7:13]You could argue why didn't I wait till the weather was weather was better. However, anyone that's been living in uh, in the UK this year, um yeah, you will know we've not really had any proper good weather. Um, anyway, this is where I'm at now. Um, I've just got the wheel arch lining out and this side trim. Um, and on the other side, just about to do the same around here.

[7:43]So, progress is slow because, um, I'm just having to sort dodge the the, um, hurricane conditions and, uh, rather than just crack on, but we'll get there. Quick little update. Um, the weather's sort of cleared up to a point, um, so I've been cracking on making some hay whilst the sun shine. Getting a nice little pile of bits now, I'm trying to keep everything in order, put bolts, nuts and bolts back where they've come from, etcetera, cuz there's a lot coming off this car. Um, not really struggling with anything too much, I'm going to pull this uh crash bar off next, uh, this one here. You just got the screen wash line running in behind it with some little clips on it. And then instead of breaking the crash bar here, I'm going to take these bolts out down here and slide the whole thing off because I've just sort of tried to undo a couple of these and yeah, no chance. They're just going to snap or something, so, uh, yeah, we carry on. Oh, and also, I've just noticed something else I'm going to have to buy. Um, so I don't know if you can see but this pulley at the bottom, it's all delaminating, so, um, that's going to have to be done really whilst uh, whilst I've got access to it all. But we can do that when I've got the engine on the stand. So, we're good.

[9:03]Rainstorm number three. Nice.

[9:10]It's uh yeah. One minute it's uh sunny and warm, next minute typhoon season. Don't know if you can see right, the lighting's gone really weird. It's gone sunny again. Um, that's all the rad pack off now. A little bit of a fight, some of the clips are a little bit weird to be honest, but, um, yeah, got got most of it off. Um, rad pack's down there with all the crash bar still attached. Tried to leave as much on as possible, which is going to make it easier for me to reassemble. Um, so now it's looking like uh exhaust, I'm going to have to disconnect that. We've got uh one, two, I think there's a third uh gearbox sort of amount under there, I don't know if you can see at the back. Um drive shafts I've got to come out. Um, and then hopefully it should all lift off. I know there's going to be things I've sort of um, missed, but hopefully it'll become uh quite obvious once I start tearing into it. So we'll just keep going. Okay, so, just disconnected the aircon line, which is just in there. Uh, this side's already off. Uh what else I've done? Right, so, down here, you've got your fuel lines. These are just push fit, so, um, press these two little tabs in and pull uh pull the pipes apart. Now, all I've done is, I've just made up a couple of little bits of hose pipe with a bolt on one end and, uh, as you can see, I've just pushed them on there just to stop the uh, any unnecessary fuel from leaking out over time. Um, so yeah, I think I've also got to take these gearbox linkages off. Um, yeah, we're getting there, we're getting there.

[11:17]Right, last update for the day, probably, I'm going to have to stop but, just disconnected the gear linkages, just to here they were a real nightmare to get off. These little clips in here are just book on one with the brackets. It's supposed to pull these apart and this one broke a little bit. But I had to get a breaker bar underneath it to free it off. Nightmare. And underneath, uh, it's popped out the clutch slave cylinder and then there's a little bracket holding the fuel hoses on, they can just rest there, they'll be fine. Um, so tomorrow probably drive shafts. Um, I've just disconnected the clamp under here for the exhaust. Don't know if that's the best one to do but I'm going to try it anyway and see how I get on. Uh, and then the engine mounts, gearbox mounts and we'll try and get it out. So, watch this space. So, I think that'll be the end of what is essentially episode one of the uh, Mini engine overhaul. Timing chain clutch series. Hope you'd sort of uh followed what I've been doing so far, I've been sort of ducking in and out, avoiding the weather, trying to film as as I'm going along. Um, I don't think you want to see every little nut and bolt I take off at this stage. I'm going to save like the more in depth stuff for when I actually start working on the engine in the garage. Uh, but I'm just keeping pace with uh, how far I'm getting on at this stage. So, hopefully it's been interesting, uh, let me know if if you would have done it differently. I'm sure there's many ways, different ways to do it, uh right and wrong ways. This is how I've done it and it it's it's stuff like, uh, the rad pack I decided to keep it attached to the crash bar because it all came off as a one, why would I want to detach it unnecessarily, that sort of stuff. But not so ways to uh skin a cat, I suppose. Uh, but yeah, I'll uh see you for the next episode and we'll hopefully get the engine out. That's what I want to see, uh, which will be tomorrow but probably next episode for you guys. All right.
