[0:00]Hello, I'm Dr. Ken Mogi. I'm a neuroscientist and a visiting professor at the Cambridge Judge Business School. And I'm here to talk about a very important subject of ikigai. Ikigai in Japanese simply means a reason for being, a reason to enjoy life. And the word ikigai is made up of two parts. Iki, which means life, and gai, which means value. So ikigai is life value. It's simply what makes your life worth living. Now, I have written a book on ikigai, The Little Book of Ikigai, and I have five pillars of ikigai. Pillar number one is starting small. So what does starting small mean? It means that you can develop your ikigai in small steps, not just by pursuing a huge ambition like winning the Nobel Prize or becoming a CEO, but by actually taking small steps. Pillar number two is releasing yourself. So what does releasing yourself mean? It means that you have to accept who you are and don't try to be like others. You are unique and your ikigai is also unique. Pillar number three is harmony and sustainability. So this means that you want to be connected to the society, to the environment in a harmonious and sustainable way. Because after all, we're all part of this large environment. Pillar number four is the joy of little things. So this means that you want to appreciate the beauty of everyday life, small pleasures like having a cup of coffee, enjoying the morning sunlight, or just listening to music. Pillar number five is being in the here and now. So this means that you don't want to get distracted by things in the past or things in the future. You just want to concentrate on the here and now and enjoy the moment. So ikigai is about understanding yourself, understanding your values, your life, and also being able to connect to the society, to the environment, and also to enjoy every moment of your life.
