[0:00]Hello, everyone. My name is Matt, and I'm a product manager on the Google Fonts team. Thanks for joining us for what I think will be a really interesting look at the past, present, and future of variable fonts. What are variable fonts, you might ask? Well, at a high level, a variable font is a single font file that behaves like multiple fonts. It can contain many different weights, widths, or other styles, and because it's a single file, it's a very efficient way to serve many different font styles to your users. The other great thing about variable fonts is that because all those styles are contained in a single font file, you can animate them or smoothly tween between them. This means you can do a lot of interesting things, like making fonts responsive, or having them react to user input, or even just having them react to the time of day. The first example of a variable font, if you will, was Multiple Master, which was released by Adobe in 1991. Multiple Master was a really powerful technology, but it was also very complex, and it was hard to use, and it never really caught on. Fast forward to 2016, and we have OpenType 1.8, which introduced variable fonts as we know them today. This was a huge step forward, and it was really exciting for us on the Google Fonts team because it meant that we could finally bring variable fonts to the web. Since then, we've been working hard to support variable fonts on Google Fonts, and we've been really excited to see the adoption grow. We've also been working with designers and developers to create new variable fonts and to explore the possibilities of what variable fonts can do. One of the most exciting things about variable fonts is that they're still very new, and there's a lot of room for innovation. We're just scratching the surface of what's possible, and we're really excited to see what the future holds. Thanks again for joining us, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the talk.
