[0:00]Hello, and welcome to this video where we're going to be talking about an exciting new feature from Amazon, uh, and this is for any users who use their EC2 instances. And specifically, if you use a feature in EC2 called launch templates, so if you're not familiar with launch templates, it's essentially a way to create a template for launching new EC2 instances. It allows you to specify all of the configuration that you need for your EC2 instances. So things like the AMI that you're going to use, the instance type, the security groups, the IM profile, the user data, all of these things you can specify in a launch template. And it makes it really easy to launch new EC2 instances that are consistent with each other. So why is this important? Well, if you use things like auto scaling groups or an elastic bean stock or ECS, all of these services use launch templates to launch new EC2 instances. So if you're using any of those services, you're already using launch templates. So the new feature that Amazon has released is the ability to enable a new version of a launch template by default. So before this feature was released, you would have to go in and manually set the default version of a launch template. So if you had a launch template and you created a new version of it, you would have to go in and set that new version as the default. And then any new instances that were launched using that launch template would use that new default version. Now, with this new feature, you can actually set a flag on the launch template that will automatically set the new version as the default. So let's say you have a launch template, you create a new version of it, it will automatically set that new version as the default. And this is really useful for things like continuous delivery, continuous deployment, where you want to be able to roll out new versions of your instances very quickly and very easily. So let's dive into the console and I'll show you how this works. So I'm in the EC2 console and if you go to launch templates, you'll see a list of your launch templates. I have one here called My Web server. And if I click on it, you'll see that I have two versions of this launch template. I have version one and version two. And you can see that version one is currently the default. So if I wanted to make version two the default, I would have to click on version two and then click on set as default version. Now, with this new feature, you can actually enable a setting on the launch template itself. So if I go back to my launch template and I click on actions, you'll see an option here called Modify launch template properties. And if I click on that, you'll see a new option here called Automatically set new version as default. So if I check this box and click on Save, now, any new versions that I create of this launch template will automatically be set as the default. So let's try that out. I'm going to create a new version of this launch template. So I'll click on actions and then create new version from template. And I'm just going to change the description to version three. And I'm not going to change anything else. I'll just click on Create launch template. So now if I go back to my launch template and I click on it, you'll see that version three is now the default. And I didn't have to do anything to set it as the default. It was automatically set as the default because I enabled that setting. So this is a really powerful feature that can save you a lot of time and effort, especially if you're using things like continuous delivery, continuous deployment. So I hope this video was helpful.
