[0:00]Hello, this is Dr. Armao. I'm one of the residents here in the Department of Neurosurgery at UPMC. I'm here to talk to you a little bit about what neuro surgery is, and some of the things that we do here at UPMC. So neuro surgery is a specialty that is focused on the surgical treatment of diseases of the nervous system. And the nervous system has a central component, which is the brain and the spinal cord, and a peripheral component, which are the nerves that go to your arms and legs. So neuro surgery is a very broad specialty that treats all diseases in that entire range, from the brain all the way down to the nerves in your hands and feet. Neuro surgery actually, um, some people think of it as just brain surgery, but it's really much more than that. There are different components, uh, to neuro surgery, and there are different sub specialties within neuro surgery. And each of those sub specialties focuses on specific diseases. For instance, there is what's called spine neuro surgery, which focuses on the diseases of the spine and the spinal cord. There's what's called cerebrovascular neuro surgery, and that focuses on the blood vessels of the brain. There is oncology neuro surgery, and that focuses on tumors of the brain and the spinal cord. And there is a functional neuro surgery which focuses on things like epilepsy and pain. And then there's also peripheral nerve neuro surgery, which focuses on the nerves of the arms and the legs. So here at UPMC, we have experts in all of those fields. And we are a very big department, and we provide surgical services to a huge range of patients. Um, UPMC in general is one of the biggest, uh, health systems in the country. And our department, uh, of neuro surgery is actually one of the biggest in the world. Uh, we have more than 50 faculty members in neuro surgery, and we cover a huge geographical area. Uh, we have hospitals all throughout Pittsburgh, uh, throughout Pennsylvania, and even extending into Maryland and Ohio. So we're able to provide, uh, neurosurgical care to a lot of patients over a wide area. Um, our department also has a huge research focus. Uh, we have very, uh, large research labs and we perform a lot of research, uh, in all of those sub specialties. So we're advancing the frontiers of neuro surgery by, uh, looking for new treatments and new ways to treat these diseases. So you can see that, uh, UPMC provides excellent care and we are a very comprehensive, uh, neurosurgery department. And we do a lot of things to try to help our patients, uh, get better from their diseases. So hopefully that gave you a little overview of what neurosurgery is, and some of the things that we do here at UPMC.
