[0:00]This is my Cessna 150. And this is an Airbus A321. In this video, we're going to see if it's faster to fly my 58-year-old two-seater that goes 100 miles an hour or take the Airlines 269 miles to Jacksonville, Florida. I'll be flying into Jacksonville Executive, a small regional airport just outside of downtown. And Laney's taking Frontier Airlines to Jacksonville International. The race is on. Last one to the USS Orleck in downtown loses and must suffer a brutal consequence. Clear prop!
[0:35]Okay, here's the deal. We both left home at exactly 12:00 p.m.. All right. One, two, three. See you. Laney got in an Uber to head to the international airport about 30 minutes away. While she fights traffic, I'm making the five-minute drive to the small airport to get the plane ready to go. I'm banking on being able to get in the air in the next 30 minutes, otherwise I'll get destroyed by the A321's 500 mile an hour cruise speed. Good afternoon, ground, Cessna 22318 on the North ramp with Papa, VFR Southeast. November 22318, Peachtreet ground for runway 21 Right, taxi via Delta Echo, advise run up complete. 21 right via Delta Echo will advise 22318.
[1:19]Should be a good flight. We've got a little bit of a tailwind that's gonna help. Should be about 2 hours and 40 minutes or so en route. At just under three hours of flight time, I'm looking at around $140 in fuel, plus I'll have some fees to pay when I get to Jacksonville Executive. So, in addition to finding out who can get there faster, we're also going to see who can do it cheaper. Okay.
[1:41]Ground 22318 run up complete. November 318, continue runway 21 Right, monitor tower. 21 right monitor tower 22318. All right, we'll go ahead and monitor tower. We're not supposed to call them here because it's busy so we just sit here and wait and they'll tell us when it's time to go. I'm gonna go ahead and get approach tuned up. 126.907, that's who we'll talk to for flight following once we're airborne.
[2:11]I think I just found the end of the line for the pre-check line. A line for a line.
[2:20]November 22318, Peachtree Tower, cross runway 21 Right at Golf. Hold short runway 21 Left. Cross 21 Right at Golf, hold short 21 Left, 22318. All right, they're gonna put us on the big runway for an intersection departure because we're going to the Southeast. So that prevents us from having to cross over, puts us on the correct side of the airport. November 318, left turn to the Southeast approved, runway 21 Left at Golf, cleared for takeoff. Left turn out approved, 21 Left at Golf. Cleared for takeoff 22318. Okay, we're cleared to go. Let's go to Jacksonville, folks. Atlanta Approach Cessna 22318. November 22318, I believe. Affirmative, yeah, 22318. We're a Cessna 150, 4 miles Southeast of PDK at 2,000 looking for a flight following to uh Charlie Romeo Golf at 5.5, please. November 22318, squawk 4147. 4147, 22318. Pretty bumpy down here. Hopefully it'll be better at 5,500, it definitely should be. Just gotta get out from under this Bravo Airspace and we'll climb it up, unless they give us a Bravo clearance. November 22318, radar contact 5 South of Peachtree DeKalb. Winder altimeter 30.26. Maintain VFR at or below 2,400' till we're past the Atlanta final. Alright, 30.26, VFR at or below 2,400 till we're south of the final 318. Thanks.
[3:59]Okay, we're just leveling off at 5,500. Way smoother up here, which is nice. And a little bit of a tailwind, but right now it's only like 2 knots. It's supposed to be a little bit better than that. But I'm just glad that the bumps are gone right now. Definitely above the haze layer. Good bit of smoke in the area from some of these forest fires. One of the many benefits of a small plane instead of an airliner is that I have no security, so I could just come pre-flight the plane, hop in and go. And another one is that in small planes you can go to small airports that are usually closer to your destination. So I don't have to go to Jax. I don't have to go to the big international airport. I'm going to Jack's Executive, the small one that's much closer to the ship that we're meeting at. Most cities we go to, there's a big airport that jets flying to, and then a bunch of smaller ones that we can kind of take our pick of which one is closest to the destination. We like to compare this thing to a car because it makes us feel better. Generally on average, flying this Cessna 150 is about half of road trip time. If it's a 4-hour road trip, probably around 2 hours. It's not always exact, but pretty close. So you can kind of napkin method if there's somewhere that you drive all the time and you're thinking about getting a 150. It's about half the time, which is great. Okay, to prepare for this race, we had to spend a little bit of money: gas for the plane, an airline flight for Laney, a hotel room. [6:18]Okay, so I've officially seen my gate. Now I can go get my snack. You know we're not going to get one on Frontier. So I of course prefer to fly with Laney, but I will say when she's not here and I have the camera bag on this seat, it's kind of a nice arm rest. And I can just hold the other yoke. It's like a Cirrus, it's like a side stick. I just kind of chill and make small inputs. I don't have to hold my arm up. It's very comfortable. Man, this smoke is brutal. It's not helping the visibility, and it smells pretty strong. But at least it's blowing that direction because we're going like 97 knots over the ground right now. So, I like that. That is worth it.
[7:10]Good afternoon, Jax, Cessna 22318 5,500 Oscar. November 22318, Jax Approach, good afternoon. Jax altimeter 30.23, sir. Hi, 30.23, 22318. Going 102 over the ground, folks. We got that tailwind now, and we've got a descent from 5,500 coming up, so we're gonna definitely pick up some speed on the way in. Got to be listening for Frontier 1550 on the radio. We might hear them.
[7:54]Jax Approach Frontier Flight 1550, level 12,000. 1550. Frontier 1550, Jacksonville Approach. Turn right heading 180 vector for your descent, maintain 2,000. All right, 180 descended to 2,000 Frontier Flight 1550. 1550, that's Laney's flight. I see it on the screen. They're about 20 miles behind me right now. They're definitely going to land first. They're just going so much faster. I think it could I think it's gonna work out, though. Because I I get to fly right past and go closer to the city. But she's definitely gonna land first. That is so funny. Frontier 1550, cleared visual approach runway 8. Contact tower. Over to tower, cleared visual approach. Runway 8, 1550. All right. All right, that's them. He's cleared for the visual. I'm about to fly over runway 8. They they literally might land under us. Oh. November 22318, contact Craig Tower 321. 321, 318. Thanks. Craig Tower, Cessna 22318, 10 to the Northwest, full stop runway 5. 22318, Craig Tower, report left base runway 5. Report left base runway 5, 22318. All right, mixture's full rich. Landing lights on. Gear is down. It is very windy down here. It's gusting to 24 knots. This is going to be a pretty intense landing. Uh my personal minimum is around 30. This is pretty much right down the runway, which is good. But this is a lot of wind. Definitely going to be fighting for it a little bit here, but if we're not comfortable, we'll go around and go somewhere else. Craig Tower 22318 is left base runway 5. Number 22318, runway 5 cleared to land. Cleared to land runway 5, 22318. All right, little cross from the left, which is my preference. It's my dominant direction. Little extra power. Stop this sync. Oh yeah, it's definitely windy.
[9:56]Oh yeah. Okay. All right, little right rudder, and then left aileron into the wind. It's not ton from the side. There we go.
[11:07]All right, I just opened and chug it. Yeah. Without it's supposed to be without burping. Without burping. You're going to drink the whole thing without burping.
[11:18]No. No.
