The handmaid's Tale costume is turning into the new go-to protest attire for women. I have my first ceremony. In the Hulu show, the handmaids are forced to wear the red cloak and bonnet as a symbol of oppression in a male-dominated society. Today, Handmaid's Tale is a trending topic on Twitter. After women in red showed up to protest a controversial ban on abortion that just passed the Senate in Alabama. The costume has been seen at hot button protests across America, including the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The costumes are homemade or purchased online. The new season of The Handmaid's Tale kicks off next month, further cementing the red cloak and bonnet as a powerful symbol. Earlier this year, the states of Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas all enacted legislation curtailing abortion rights.
