[0:14]Today we're feeding about 250 people. There isn't food at home so we come to the place where he can give us and provide for us. It's estimated that nearly a quarter of South Africans go to bed hungry every night. And these figures are from even before the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to millions more South Africans losing their jobs. And so feeding schemes like this one are nothing new, but what makes this one different is that all the food we see being served today was saved from a trip to the incinerator. So what's the story?

[0:50]The process starts here at the market. Nationally, South Africa waste about 12.6 million tons of produce a year. So this year managed to rescue about 1000 tons. Does anybody want chillies? Please go and get chili NO, No. NO, No. I don't know what you normally get from this.

[1:17]They rescue food to feed those going hungry. So we collect from retailers, we collect from farmers, from restaurants, hotels, from from suppliers, you know, wherever there's going to be surplus, we try to plug that into this massive network of hunger in South Africa. After leaving the market, the food is brought here at a place called the Share House, where it will be prepared for collection. I'm actually rescuing this cabbage from the state it was to making it edible. We have a very strong policy at Chefs with Compassion of zero wastage. So you'll see that anything that can't be used and is not fit for human consumption will be collected by pig farmers in the area. So we're also supporting local pig farmers and also making sure that absolutely nothing does go to waste. The rescued food is distributed to chefs and kitchens in the region.

[2:15]With the schools closed, the needy's more because our the children is hungry, there's no bread at home, the people is not working. Feeding the community, it's a joy that nobody can express, you know, a child that you know that doesn't have, coming in by the gate with their plate, empty plate and going out of here with the plate full of food, that makes me happy.
