Still brimming with confidence, he followed the heavy lead weight down to the bottom of the sea. When he reached for the key to unlock the chains, he realized it was gone. Panicking, he began frantically searching around, but the sea floor was covered in smooth river rocks. Finding a small key among them was nearly impossible. To make things worse, his oxygen was already running low, and the 100-lb lead ball was still strapped to him. Swimming back up wasn't an option. He tried yanking at the chains, but it was no use. Above the surface, the crowd assumed he was just extending the act for dramatic effect. But his assistant sensed something was wrong. The magician usually surfaced within 10 minutes, but it had already been 12 and there was still no sign of him. Worried, the assistant ran to the other side and dove into the water from the opposite side of the tank. She swam towards him as fast as she could, and sure enough, she spotted the magician in distress. Then she gave him a quick breath of air to help him hold on, and then immediately began searching for the lost key. Luckily, she found it fairly quickly. It was wedged between rocks. The magician snatched it and fumbled with trembling hands to unlock the chains. Finally, he was free. Without wasting a second, he swam desperately to the surface. Bursting through the water and gasping for air, he had made it. The performance was a success, but just barely. The crowd erupted in applause, cheering wildly, completely unaware that he had almost shat in the sea. Meanwhile, the assistant sneakily got back to the shore without the crowd noticing her.
