[0:03]Welcome to come study with three. A come follow me podcast created by Ancestors 4 young adults. Each week we dive into the scriptures, ask real questions and explore how the gospel speaks for our lives today. This series is brought to you by Y-Religion, AP YU, Religious Education. Welcome to come study with me. My name is Alice and I'm here with my co-host Eddie. What's up guys? We're also joined today by our friend Nathan Williamson. Nathan, would you be willing to introduce yourself for us? Yeah. Hey, I'm Nathan Williamson. I'm from San Diego, California, up in Southern California. All my life. I love going to the beach, love surfing and I recently just got back from the mission. I served in the Thailand Bangkok West Mission. Studying here at BYU, studying political science, uh, and really excited to read about the law today. Thailand, dude, that is pretty awesome. Well, Nathan, thank you so much. If you're if you're listening to this, Nathan has one of the coolest shirts I've ever seen on right now. Um, if you really if you want to check it out, just watch this on YouTube, but Nathan's pretty cool. We're also joined today by sister Janine Martin. Sister Martin is our guest expert today. Sister Martin, if you could please introduce yourself. Yes, thanks for having me expert sounds like a little bit of a pretentious term but hoping to add a little bit of insight here today. So I also not like Nathan grew up in Southern California, love the beach, uh Orange County girl, um but then have lived in Utah for the past while after going to school. I got my master's degree in social work and I work as a licensed clinical social work, have a private practice. I work with a lot of clients that are struggling with religious struggles, a lot of relationship things. And then I also teach an adjunct in religious studies at BYU, which is really fun. Awesome. Thank you so much. So today we are in Exodus chapters 35 through 40. Leviticus chapter 1, 4, 16 and 19. These sections are a little bit technical guys and it can be a little bit down. Janine, what's going on in these sections or these chapters? So, where we're at now is this is kind of the very end of Exodus. This is our climax that we get here. What's happened before this is that the Israelites were freed from slavery and Moses has been up on Mount Sinai receiving instruction from God. At the meantime, the Israelites are down at the base of Mount Sinai. They got a little impatient with how long it was taking Moses up there. And so they actually start, they build a golden calf. They start worshiping that. God is not too happy about that. And so has to intervene on their behalf, plead for them and the Israelites make a new covenant with God. and that's kind of what takes us to this point is now Moses is ready to give the Israelites more instruction that he has received from God. and this instruction is particularly about the building of the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle is known as the the dwelling place of God on earth, it's where heaven and earth meet and this is going to be a portable tabernacle that they learn to and so Moses has received instruction about that. He's going to start telling the people how to build it. These chapters in Exodus go over the actual building of the Tabernacle of God's presence coming to it. And then we get into Leviticus. And Leviticus is the chapter that is the law. This is a law about how God helps make his people a holy people belonging to him. Awesome. Thank you for that. I love that you mentioned the law is the way that we become holy. And rephrasing, you know, reading a section like or a book like Leviticus that might be a little difficult. I it was difficult for me reading through this this time that I was like, I I truthfully don't understand but framing it in that that way can help us understand it a little bit better.
[3:45]Sister Martin, did you want to give any more about the temple before we jump into it? Yeah, let's try about the Tabernacle. So I there are many people out there who are definitely scholars and experts on the Tabernacle and there have been some beautiful books written that go really out the the, but thought it might be helpful that we know what we're talking about a little bit here.
[4:06]So, um did any of you three have the opportunity to do the temple uh the the, uh the experience when it was here where they actually created a replica and you get to walk through it? No, but I've seen photos of it. Yeah, they they have that, that's uh where it came from coming here to. That's cool. I actually didn't know that it was a permanent setup in San Diego. That's great. Um but yes, I love that they that replica of it and the church actually has some videos that go through that replica as well if you wanted to look those up and you know kind of see the details that they go into but just so that we know the structure of the tabernacle because that's what a lot of these chapters go into. The tabernacle has three parts. It has the outer courtyard and in the outer courtyard we have the altar of sacrifice. That's where the animal sacrifices would happen, the priest would be in the outer courtyard. We also know that there was like they sing Psalms and the outer courtyard, there were some things going on like that. And then also in the outer courtyard was the basin of water, the laver of water that happened for the washing and the anointing before actually getting to enter the tent of the tabernacle. Once you get into the tent of the tabernacle that has two parts. It first has the holy place and the holy place has the shoe bread, the 12 loaves of shoe bread and it also has the, the light that is always on there. and then it also has the altar of incense that that is the the spirit, the incense, the prayers that go up to heaven and that altar of incense is right before the veil and the veil separates the holy place from the holy of holies. And within the holy of holies is the ark of the Covenant which holds the testimony, holds the plates, uh the commandments and then on top of the ark of the Covenant is the mercy seat, which is God's seat where he could come dwell. And just a little bit more text for these chapters is that we know that only the high priest could enter the Holy of holies. This happened one day a year called the day of atonement, also known as Yomper within the Jewish tradition and on this day that high priest would go through his sorrows, his washing, his anointing, and then he was able to enter the holy of holies. He would sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice onto the ark of covenant the covenant to make atonement for all of the Israelites and be able to bring God's presence. So, these chapters they teach us a lot about how we can belong to God, how we can be his people, how he can make us holy and transform us so that we can be like him and also be with him.
