[0:10]Sam liked to lie in the sun. "Why can't the sun shine every day?" said Sam. You should plant some sunflowers, said the ladybird. Sunflowers are big and yellow, just like the sun, said the worm.
[0:34]Sam bought some seeds. It was a good day for planting them. The sun was warm. The soil was damp. Sam found a sunny spot in his garden. He made some little holes and put a seed in each hole. Then he covered them with soil and watered them.
[1:02]Sam has left lots of space between them because they're going to grow so big.
[1:15]For the first few days Sam watched and waited, but nothing happened. Oh, well, perhaps I'll never have any big yellow sunflowers.
[1:32]I can see a little root bursting out of the seed case, said the worm.
[1:43]A few days later, Sam looked outside. His flower bed had changed. It was full of little leaves. I like these, said Sam. They are little and green. But where are my big yellow sunflowers? You've got to be patient. The next week it was hot and sunny. How can I help my sunflowers grow? Sam asked. You must water them, said the ladybird.
[2:29]The roots then drank up the good things from the soil that will help the plant to grow.
[2:40]On sunny days the plants grew. On rainy days the plants grew too. Soon there were lots of big green leaves on the stems. The sunlight on the leaves helps the plant to make food for itself to grow. I like these, said Sam. They are taller than me. But where are my big yellow sunflowers?
[3:13]Look up here, said Ladybird. At the top of each plant was a big green bud. The petals are kept safe inside the bud until the flower is ready to open.
[3:33]That's the bud. I like these, said Sam. They are nice and round. But where are my big yellow sunflowers? Maybe tomorrow you'll have a nice surprise, said the worm. Wow! It was a big, yellow, sunflower.
[4:13]All summer long Sam played in the garden. Come and see my big yellow sunflowers, he cried. We like these, said Sam's friends. It was worth waiting. And all day long the big yellow sunflowers turned their faces to follow the big yellow sun. Good morning! Let's have lunch! Good afternoon!
[4:50]But at the end of the summer, the petals started to wither. Sam was very sad. The stems and leaves turned brown. Don't worry, said Ladybird. Look at the middle of the flower. The plant is making sure that there will be more sunflowers next year. It was full of seeds, just like the ones Sam had planted. Take the seeds out carefully, said Ladybird, and give them to your friends to plant next spring. And that's just what Sam did!
