Okay, let's start working through the most common leadership and management interview questions, my tips, and top-scoring example answers. So right at the very start of your leadership and management interview, they will say to you, tell me about yourself. This question is being asked to assess your communication capabilities and whether you have the skills, attributes, and confidence to excel in the position. This is a really important tip. I recommend you talk about the following four things in your answer. Write these down. Number one, the skills you have that match the leadership or management role you are applying for. Any experience you can bring to their organization, details of achievements you have attained in your career so far, and then finally, the type of leader you are and how you will act in your role to get the most from your team. So let me now give you a unique top-scoring answer to this first question. Tell me about yourself. Here we go. Thank you for this opportunity. I am a confident, decisive, strategically focused, and results-driven leader with the skills, competence, knowledge, and aptitude to thrive in this position. My diverse experience leading and managing teams, conducting staff performance reviews, and establishing team goals based on key performance indicators means I can have an immediate impact in the role. I have a track record of success. In my last leadership role, I turned around an underperforming team, brought creative ideas to the company to increase sales and improved systems and processes to help save money. If you hire me, I will be a decisive and transformational leader who supports the senior management team to help achieve the company's commercial and financial goals. I look forward to sharing additional details in the interview regarding my suitability for this position. That is a brilliant, top-scoring example introduction for your leadership and management interview. And you can see how effective my seat structure is, skills, experience, achievements, and the type of leader you will be in the role. And you can easily remember my seat structure for, tell me about yourself because you will be sitting down on a seat at your leadership interview. Here is the next question I strongly recommend you prepare for. What is your leadership style? This question is being asked to assess whether your leadership style aligns with the organization's culture and ambitions. I recommend you give more than one leadership style in your answer. This is a brilliant response. Write it down and consider using it at your interview. What is your leadership style? My leadership style is a combination of autocratic, delegative, and transformational. When my team or department is under pressure and we have tight deadlines, I will be autocratic. I will outline our goal, the plan of action, and inform my team of what needs to be done, by whom, and when. I always strive to utilize a delegative leadership style, meaning I will allocate tasks to team members based on their core skills and strengths. This ensures all tasks and projects are completed to a very high standard. Finally, I like to adopt a transformational style of leadership. I will train and coach my staff to empower them to reach their full potential and will encourage everyone to embrace change, as this helps the team stay competitive and the company successful. So that is a brilliant example answer that uses three effective leadership styles: autocratic, delegative, and transformational. What I like about that answer is you are explaining how each leadership style will benefit the organization, and it also shows that you are adaptable. It means that you can react to various situations with confidence. Now, don't go anywhere because I still have more questions, tips, and answers to give you. But when you are ready, you can click that link in the top right-hand corner of the video, go through to my website, passmyinterview.com, and instantly download these slides plus my full set of 22 leadership and management interview answers. As I said, I have more than 30 years experience as a leader and manager. I spent many of those years in the fire service and I have also ran my own company for many, many years. That is a brilliant resource, I recommend you get it at the end of this training session. Here is the next question. I strongly advise you prepare for: How do you manage underperformance? This question is being asked to assess whether you have the confidence to deal with underperformance quickly and resolve it so that your team or department can progress. In your answer, say that you would act immediately as soon as you became of aware of the underperformance. That is very important. Here is the perfect answer. How do you manage underperformance? I manage underperformance quickly and efficiently. If a manager or leader ignores underperformance in the hope that it will resolve itself, it sets a bad example to the remainder of the team. I will speak privately with the individual who is underperforming to determine the cause. During conversations, I keep an open mind. They may feel that they have not received adequate training, or they may be experiencing personal problems, in which case I will support them. Once the reason has been established, I will create a plan of action that might include additional training with clear deadlines for improvement. During the improvement stage, I will monitor their work closely and provide encouragement and guidance until they are operating again at peak performance. Can you imagine giving that level of answer at your leadership or management interview? You are going to get hired. Here is the next question. How do you motivate a team? This question is being asked to assess whether you have the skills and knowledge to get the most from your team. Now, some of the most effective ways to motivate a team include the following. I always used these methods in the fire service and also when running my own company. Clear communication. This means communicating with your team regularly to keep them informed. Providing your team or department with high-quality training that empowers them to do their jobs competently. Giving feedback to help drive improvements, so if you see something wrong or something not being done correctly, you give feedback and guidance and also giving praise when it is deserved. So let's put everything together in my top-scoring, brilliant example answer. How do you motivate a team? I do four things to motivate my team. First, I provide feedback and training that empower them to complete their jobs competently and to the required standards. If a team has the correct training and understands the importance of constructive feedback, they will feel motivated. Second, I provide clear instructions as to our objectives and communicate regularly. If a team knows what they are doing and the reason why, they will feel motivated. Third, I create a set of team values that everyone demonstrates in their work. The values include collaboration, integrity, respect, and accountability. Finally, I give praise when it is deserved. By incorporating these four actions into my work, every team I lead or manage feels motivated to do a great job for our employer. Another powerful, confident answer that will help you pass your leadership and management interview. Here is the next question. What makes a good leader? You have to give the correct answer to this tough question. So this question is being asked to assess whether you understand what skills, qualities, and attributes are required to be a competent and high-performing leader. In your answer, don't forget to include the following: Consistency, decision making, creating team values, and supporting the senior management team. Here is another top-scoring example answer. What makes a good leader? A good leader is someone consistent. They treat everyone on the team the same, provide equal opportunities for training, and develop a clear path for progression. A good leader will create team values, explain their benefits, and reference them during team discussions. A good leader will communicate often with their team, involve them in decision-making when appropriate, encourage their team to put forward ideas and suggestions, and keep everyone updated and informed about company developments and plans. A good leader will give both positive and constructive feedback and will not be afraid to highlight when something is wrong or when a team member has acted against the values. Finally, a good leader will be decisive, drive results, support the senior management team in the organization's strategic goals, and promote the importance of change and continuous improvement.
