Where YouTube hides the transcript
YouTube does not make transcripts easy to find. There is no prominent "Transcript" tab or button — the feature is tucked away behind menus that most users never click. The location has also changed over the years as YouTube has redesigned its interface, which adds to the confusion.
Here is exactly where to look, depending on which version of the YouTube interface you are seeing.
The Three-Dot Menu (Desktop)
On a desktop or laptop browser, open the YouTube video page. Below the video player you will see a row of buttons: Like, Dislike, Share, Save, and a three-dot icon (sometimes shown as three horizontal dots). Click the three-dot icon and look for "Show transcript" in the dropdown menu.
If you see "Show transcript," click it and a panel will open on the right side of the video showing timestamped text. Each line of text is linked to the corresponding moment in the video — click a timestamp to jump there.
Important: This method only works on desktop browsers. The YouTube mobile app (both iOS and Android) does not show the transcript option in the three-dot menu. If you are on a phone, you will need to switch to a desktop browser or use TubeScript instead.
Inside the Video Description
YouTube has been gradually moving the transcript link into the video description area. On some videos, especially newer uploads, you will not find "Show transcript" in the three-dot menu at all. Instead, click the video title or "...more" link to expand the full description.
Inside the expanded description, look for a "Show transcript" button. It is usually near the bottom of the description, below the video details like upload date and view count. Clicking it opens the same transcript panel on the right side of the player.
This is a common source of confusion: people look for the transcript in the three-dot menu, do not find it, and assume the video has no transcript. In many cases the link has simply moved to the description area.
When Transcripts Are Missing — and Why
If you have checked both the three-dot menu and the description area and still cannot find a transcript, the video genuinely does not have one on YouTube. This happens more often than you might expect. Here are the most common reasons:
Creator disabled captions
Video creators can turn off auto-captions in YouTube Studio. When captions are disabled, the transcript viewer is also hidden. Some creators do this because auto-captions were inaccurate or contained errors they didn't want associated with their content.
Speech recognition failed
YouTube's auto-caption system sometimes fails to generate captions, especially for videos with heavy background music, poor audio quality, non-standard accents, or multiple overlapping speakers. Music videos, ambient sound recordings, and ASMR content often lack auto-captions.
Unsupported language
While YouTube auto-captions support many languages, some languages and dialects are not covered. If the spoken language in the video is not supported by YouTube's speech recognition, no auto-captions (and therefore no transcript) will be generated.
Very new upload
Auto-captions are not generated instantly. After a video is uploaded, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours for YouTube to process and generate the transcript. If the video was just published, check back later.
Generate a Transcript with TubeScript
When YouTube does not have a transcript, TubeScript fills the gap. Our AI does not rely on YouTube's auto-captions at all — it watches the video directly and generates a transcript from the audio, regardless of whether YouTube has captions enabled.
This means TubeScript works on every YouTube video that has spoken content, including videos where the creator has disabled captions, videos in languages that YouTube does not support for auto-captions, and videos where YouTube's speech recognition failed.
How to use it: Copy the URL of the YouTube video. Paste it into TubeScript (at the top of this page or at tubescript.cc). The AI will process the video and produce a full transcript with timestamps, proper punctuation, paragraph breaks, and speaker labels. The entire process takes about 30 seconds for a typical video.
You get 3 free transcripts per day with no account needed. For heavier usage, the Pro plan provides unlimited transcripts along with AI summaries and export options.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I find the transcript button on a YouTube video?
There are several reasons. The video creator may have disabled captions. YouTube's speech recognition may have failed to generate auto-captions for that video. You may be on the YouTube mobile app, which does not show the transcript option. Or the video may contain mostly music or non-speech audio. If you cannot find the transcript on YouTube, use TubeScript to generate one with AI.
Where exactly is the transcript button on YouTube?
On desktop, look below the video player. Click the three-dot menu icon (sometimes labeled 'More') next to the Save/Share buttons. In the dropdown, you'll see 'Show transcript' if captions are available. On some videos, YouTube has moved this to the description area — expand the description and look for a 'Show transcript' link.
Can I find transcripts for old YouTube videos?
It depends. If the video had auto-captions generated at any point, the transcript will still be available. However, very old videos uploaded before YouTube's auto-caption system launched (around 2009-2010) may not have transcripts. YouTube has also been retroactively generating captions for older videos, so it's worth checking. If not available, TubeScript can generate a fresh transcript.
Does YouTube have transcripts for live streams?
Live streams typically get auto-captions during the broadcast, but the recorded version may or may not retain a transcript. YouTube usually generates auto-captions for the recorded version within a few hours after the stream ends. If the transcript is not yet available, try again later or use TubeScript to generate one immediately.
Is there a way to search inside a YouTube video's transcript?
YouTube's built-in transcript panel does not have a search function, but you can use your browser's Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) while the transcript panel is open. For a better experience, generate the transcript with TubeScript and use the search function on the transcript page, which highlights matches and lets you jump to timestamps.
