As you know, I design materials for complete beginners. What we have today is a simple text with a very basic structure and not too dense when it comes to terminology or content. As you've seen, the title is, Is Cycling the Best Mode of Transport? So if you're ready, let's go. Use this video to work on the following skills: Memory training into your A language or mother tongue. Memory training from your B and C languages. Introduction to consecutive interpreting note-taking in your mother tongue. Introduction to consecutive interpreting note-taking in your B language. Don't forget to take advantage of the auto-generated captions on YouTube to practice sight translation and split attention, because they sometimes include mistakes, misspelt words and literal translations. This exercise forces you to wait before rephrasing your performance. It helps you to avoid making mistakes and improves your short-term memory. There are articulation, pronunciation and intonation mistakes in the videos. I have left them on purpose because we also find them in real-life conferences and should learn how to tackle them. Always remember that progress in interpreting may seem slow, but you will soon realize that you suddenly are taking quantum leaps in your progression. [2:40]Is cycling the best mode of transport? With global warming happening at an alarming pace, rising fuel prices and lowering incomes, we really need to rethink our lifestyle. Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends and colleagues. I am incredibly grateful to see so many of you here this afternoon. Thank you for coming to this workshop at a very untimely hour of the day, 2:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. I dare say this session is the epitome of what is called a graveyard slot. I hope you will really enjoy it and I hope that will have a wonderful exchange of ideas and debate after my short talk. Let me go back to the topic of my presentation. Is cycling the best mode of transport? I think that listing all of its advantages is going to help us reply to this question. First, bikes are very convenient to use. Second, there is no denying that cycling is environment friendly as it helps reduce consumption of fossil fuels and lowers air and noise pollution levels to zero. Third, when we cycle, we improve our mental and physical health. Decreased depression and anxiety levels, better sleep are benefits related to cycling. Fourth, cycling is cost effective, you only need the energy and power your legs can provide to keep the bicycle moving and bicycles also cost less to maintain than a car. Fifth, cycling is a faster mode of transport for shorter distances. It has been proven to be the case for distances up to 5 kilometers. At the same time, when there are terrible traffic jams due to roadworks and the like, cyclists always have an advantage over drivers. Sixth, when it comes to storage, you can fit 12 bicycles in a single car parking space. Seventh, bikes offer you door-to-door service, you can usually park a bicycle closer to destinations than a car. Eighth, it is a great social activity, you can meet for friends for a nice long ride and then have a meal together. Finally, it's cheaper to buy a bike than a car.
