Kim Yong Kwang's childhood is quite depressing. His father was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He sustained injuries from the war and later passed away when Kim Yong Kwang was only in sixth grade. Since then, he had to earn money in all sorts of ways, including delivering newspapers at such a young age. However, he was asked to be a model for an advertisement while he was just walking down a street when he was 19. He served only six months of military service. All able-bodied South Korean men are required to enlist by the age of 28 and must serve for a minimum of 18 months. However, Kim Yong Kwang was only required to be enlisted for six months as a public service soldier. The reason is that the actor's father had been a Vietnam War veteran, as well as an acknowledged person of national merit. Thus, abiding by regulations, children of a person considered to be of national merit are required to serve only six months of military service. Kim Yong Kwang began his mandatory military service on December 12, 2013 and was discharged in June 2014. He avoids ramen to keep his body in shape. The star who first debuted as a fashion and runway model and is now acting, stated that he has now become so accustomed to living a healthier lifestyle due to changing his eating habits. He stated, "It's almost a requirement that I stay away from processed foods like ramen and other junk food in order to maintain my body." He goes out and walks to relieve his worries.
