[0:11]Ontkennende vorm. The negative. If we ontken something, then we deny it. We say ah ah No. Aikona! In Afrikaans, when you make something negative, when we deny something, we use the double "nie". Let's have a look. Ek lees 'n boek. I am reading a book. We make that negative if we are denying that, we say I'm not reading a book. However, in Afrikaans we use the double nie, so we will say Ek lees nie 'n boek nie. Do you see? Double "nie". If you would do that to the English part, it would be I'm not reading a book, not. Now, let's have a look at where we put the two nies in a sentence. Let's look at stompie.
[1:13]Our first nie will come after verb one. Verb one is words like is, ek is, het, ek het, lees, ek lees, skop, ek skop. We'll put the nie after verb one. Ek is nie, ek het nie, ek lees nie, ek skop nie. And then the second nie will go at the end of the sentence. Ek is nie honger nie. Ek het nie kos nie. Ek lees nie 'n boek nie. Ek skop nie die bal nie. Now, we do not always use the double nie. However, we do use it when we have a verb one and we'll have a nie as well as an object. Because verb one is very important but then if we have something else, if we have an object as well, then we put the double nie at the end of the sentence. Then we have a double burger. Because verb one, very important, is the one patty and we have something else, we have an object, so we have another patty and thus we have a lekker double burger. If we have only a subject and verb one, then we do not have a double nie. We do not have a double burger, we only have a single. Then we are not going to put the second nie at the end of the sentence, we don't have to. Let's look at some examples of a subject and a verb one. Ek dans. Ek sing. Ek lees. Ek eet. Now we're going to put the nie after the verb one. Ek dans nie. Ek sing nie. Ek lees nie. Ek eet nie. Thus we have a single burger. Because we only have verb one, making it one patty, only a single burger.
[3:36]Let's recap a single burger and a double burger. A single burger, a single "nie" is verb one followed by nie. But with a double burger, the double "nie", we have verb one followed by nie as well as an object or something else followed by a nie making it a nice double burger. Some people also call this single burger sentence, the pirate sentence because it only has one "nie". Here it. One "nie". Let's do some together. Ek eet 'n burger. So we know the first nie will go after verb one, the second one at the end of the sentence. Ek eet nie 'n burger nie. Ek kyk TV.
[4:35]First nie will go after the verb, the second nie at the end of the sentence. Ek kyk nie TV nie. Ek dans in my kamer. The first nie will go after the verb one, the second nie at the end of the sentence. Ek dans nie in my kamer nie.
[4:59]Now, if we have a verb one followed by a pronoun or a proper noun, the nie comes after this pronoun or proper noun. Not after verb one like I just told you. Let's have a look. Ek roep haar. Haar, after our verb one, we have now a proper noun or pronoun. Haar, we have a pronoun. Now, I just told you, we are going to put the nie after the proper noun or the pronoun. Ek roep haar nie. Let's look at another sentence. Ek slaan hom teen die kop. Hom is our pronoun. So, I just said the nie, the first nie will go after the pronoun or proper noun and the second nie at the end of the sentence. Ek slaan hom nie teen die kop nie.
[6:01]Now, if we need to answer a question in the negative. How do you know the sentence is a question? It starts with a verb and it ends with a question mark. The question mark is kind of a dead giveaway that it is a question. So, what do we do? We start with nie, because we are answering it but we are being very, very negative. So we say nie, then the subject, then verb one, then the nie after verb one and then the then another nie, the second nie at the end of the sentence. Let's have a look. Eet die kinders? So we're going to start with nie, then the subject, then the verb and then the other nie at the end of the sentence. Nee, die kinders, that's the subject, eet nie. Is dit koud vandag? Nee, dit is nie koud vandag nie.
[7:15]With answering a question, we need to change the pronoun. As ek vir jou vra, hou jy van skool? Do you like school? Then you are going to answer it and say yes or no, I like school. So, hou jy van skool and you are answering it, nee, ek. Jy word ek, hou nie because the nie comes after the verb one, van skool nie. Now, if we need to change a command to the negative. How do we know it's a command? It will start with a verb and ends with an exclamation mark. The exclamation mark is kind of a dead giveaway. We start with moenie. You see, the word nie is also in there.
[8:09]Moenie, and then we'll have our second nie at the end. Here's our sentence. Antwoord die telefoon! We're going to start with moenie, and then the subject, verb, and the nie at the end. So moenie die telefoon antwoord nie! Bel die polisie!
[8:35]We're going to start with moenie, then the subject, then the verb and then the nie at the end. So, moenie die polisie, that is our subject, bel nie.
[8:49]If we have asseblief in the command, if we're asking nicely, we're asking please. So moenie is actually moet nie. So now, when we have the asseblief in the command, we are going to put the asseblief in the middle there. So we're going to start with that, then have our, we're going to start with that, then have our subject, verb one, the rest of the sentence and we end with nie. Antwoord asseblief die telefoon! So I just told we're going to start with moet asseblief nie. Moet asseblief nie and then the subject. Moet asseblief nie die telefoon antwoord nie! Bel asseblief die polisie! Moet asseblief nie die polisie, that's our subject, bel nie!
[9:48]Certain words need to change in the negative. Let's look at this example. Is daar iemand by die huis? If you put our two "nies" in there, it would be nee, daar is nie iemand by die huis nie. However, we are going to change a word there. We are going to change the iemand to niemand. And the nie will fall away. Nee, daar is niemand by die huis nie.
[10:21]There are some of the words that are going to change. It's like in English. Have you ever? No, no, I have never. Did somebody see it? No, nobody saw it. Um, did you already do it? No, not yet. Alles of iets word niks nie. The nie at the end. Het almal? Nee, niemand het nie. Het jy altyd of ooit? Nee, nee, nooit nie. Moet jy? Nee, ek moenie. Het jy alreeds? Nee, ek het nog nie dit gedoen nie. Het jy al êrens dit gesien? Nee, ek het dit nog nêrens gesien nie. Het jy al ooit? Nee, ek het nog nooit nie. Het jy al? Nee, ek het nog nie dit gedoen nie. These are just words that you will have to go through and study. Kom ons doen 'n paar saam. Het jy al ooit gerook? Ooit is going to change. Nee, ek het nog nooit gerook nie. And we have a nie at the end. Het iemand gehoor? Nee, niemand het gehoor nie. Now, very important, we may not have a double negative. We do not need that kind of negativity in our lives. Let's have a look here. Was iemand ooit winkel toe? Now there are two words that we can change, iemand and ooit. However, we are not going to do that. We are only going to negate the first word, we're only going to change the first word, make the first one negative. Nee, niemand. Iemand word niemand. Niemand was ooit winkel toe nie. We can't change ooit, but we're not going to.
[12:39]Easy peasy. Good luck guys.
